What to know

  • Samsung Galaxy S22 users may also receive AI features.
  • Samsung is working hard on Galaxy AI’s hybrid model that combines cloud-based AI with on-device technology.
  • Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, which has the same chip as the S22 series, will also get the AI upgrade.

It’s no secret that Samsung plans to bring a slew of AI features to its more high-end devices, the likes of which include the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9. But it appears that these AI features will trickle down to some of the older phones too, especially the Galaxy S22.

Roh Tae-moon, Samsung’s President and Head of Mobile Experience Business, revealed during a shareholders’ meeting that the company is “reviewing whether Galaxy AI can be applied to previous products, including the Galaxy S22 series.”

Bringing state-of-the-art AI features to older phones won’t be easy since they depend greatly on the hardware capabilities of the device. Even though Galaxy AI will combine on-device technology with cloud-based AI, it will require a lot of effort.

Adapting the AI features to older hardware may not produce results on par with Samsung’s more premium devices, and users should temper their expectations right from the start. But it does look like Samsung wants to bring Galaxy AI into the hands of as many users as possible. We can only hope that it doesn’t break the features that do work in the process.
