Samsung isn’t content with how big they’ve gone when they’ve come to smartphones with the Galaxy Note 2, so now the Korean manufacturer is in the process of going even bigger with their new Galaxy Mega range of devices, and the specs of the first Galaxy Mega phablet (are we still using that word?) have leaked.
According to Sammobile, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 (model number GT-I9152) will be the first of the new line of devices, sporting – you guessed it – a 5.8″ display. Just 0.2-inches shy of a full 6-inches, the resolution of the display will be 960 x 540 pixels, which will result in a not so sharp pixel density similar to the Galaxy Grand and its 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) screen. Rather disappointing to hear, and even though we’re looking at a mid-range device, a 720p resolution wouldn’t have gone amiss.
Powering the Galaxy Mega 5.8 will be a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and 1.5GB of RAM, while other specs include an 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS connectivity, and a 2,600 mAh battery housed in a body measuring 164 x 83.8 x 9.7mm. Android 4.1/4.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s Nature UX will make up the software side of things. Oh, and there will be two SIM slots, though a single SIM variant should be available as well.
Samsung looks to be pretty serious about the phablet business, and is apparently also working on a 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega. While the Galaxy Note 2 is a great device, it does make me wonder if hitting the 6-inch level is really needed, though I guess fans of phablets will probably lap it up happily. Not to mention that devices like the Galaxy Mega or Grand also enable those unwilling to buy flagship devices to enjoy the merits of a large screen (with understandable trade-offs, like the low-resolution of the display), so I guess I’m not really complaining.
I’m sure an official announcement for the Galaxy Mega is incoming soon. What do you guys think? Hit or miss?
