Samsung didn’t show us anything exciting from its mobile business at CES 2015, but in an event in Malaysia the company showcased yet another device in the Galaxy Alpha series, the Samsung Galaxy A7. The device is reported to be the slimmest smartphone Samsung has ever built with only 6.3 mm of thickness.
The Galaxy A7 specs include a 5.5 inch screen with display resolution of 1920×1080 (400 PPI). The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz with 2GB RAM and 2600 mAh battery. Galaxy A7 will run on Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, but will soon receive the Android 5.0 lollipop update.
As for the camera, the device rocks a 13MP camera on its back and 5MP on front. A setup we are seeing on a lot of devices that are to be released in 2015. A 5MP front camera is becoming the norm now, and yes it’s all for the love of selfies.
The Galaxy A7 is completely metal like all other Galaxy Alpha devices, but we’ve have a good feeling that this is the device Samsung is putting to compete with the likes of Xiaomi’s Mi5 and the slimmer phones various Chinese manufacturers have been bragging lately.
Samsung has had a rough 2014 in smartphone sales. The Galaxy S5 didn’t sell well because of its aging aesthetics, but the budget smartphone is where Samsung received the real knock out. Manufacturers like Micromax, Xiaomi, Xolo and a few others swiped off the budget smartphone market from popular manufacturers like Samsung with devices far better in specs than Sammy and others had on offer.
The Galaxy A7 price is set at $400 (INR 25,000), which is still high if we compare it to devices from other manufacturers offering the same specsheet for half the price. Take the Asus Zenfone 2 for example, the device has similar specifications, has far better user interface, ZenUI, than Samsung’s TouchWiz and it’ll sell only for $199 (INR 12,000).
However, the Galaxy A7 will compete good in terms of price with the Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship, Xiaomi Mi5, which is rumored to cost around $600.
Galaxy A7 release date is set to somewhere in February 2015 in Malaysia, but the device might release in South Korea first. As for the rest of the world, Galaxy A7 release date should be in-between February or March 2015.
