While all the rumors about the Galaxy S4 till now have only excited people, the latest ones might be disappointing quite a few folks. According to Sammobile’s insiders, Samsung will drop both the Super AMOLED display and their Exynos Octa quad-core processor from the Galaxy S4!
As a die-hard fan of Samsung’s Super AMOLED displays, mostly due to their deep blacks, this is disappointing news indeed. The insider reports that the display will instead be a 4.99″ Full HD SoLux display, which I presume might use Samsung’s Super PLS technology like on the Nexus 10. While we still might get a great display, it most probably won’t have the same contrast and dark blacks we’re all used to with Super AMOLED displays, though fans of natural colours on their display will be quite happy.
Also, it is reported that Samsung could not control heating issues on their quad-core Exynos Octa chipset and will be using a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor instead, clocked at 1.9 GHz. However, this might actually be good news for all the custom ROM buffs out there, as the lack of code and documentation for Exynos processors has resulted in quite a few issues in AOSP ROMs such as CyanogenMod. Qualcomm processors are regarded the best when it comes to community support, so at least this isn’t something to worry about as long as the performance remains great.
There is some new information on the design and construction of the device as well. As you can see from the screenshot above, Samsung seems to have forgone the design language used on the Galaxy S3 and almost every other device the company has released lately.
The source also mentions that the Galaxy S4 will be made of aluminium on the sides and have a plastic back cover, which should continue the tradition of a removable battery on Samsung devices. The dimensions of the device will be 140.1 x 71.8 x 7.7mm and it will weigh 138g. Oh, and apparently Samsung is still using a hardware home button, along with touch buttons for the remaining navigation keys, which is sure to irk fans of software/capacitive buttons.
However, all this info is currently only a rumor so it might turn out Samsung won’t stop using either the Super AMOLED display or their own Exynos processor. But if they do, well, even then I’m sure Samsung will come up with a killer device like they’ve done for the past three years. Sure, it will be sad to see the Super AMOLED display go, but as long as we get something as good or even better in return, we’ll keep the complaining to a minimum.
We’ll be on the lookout on any further news regarding this, and as Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S4 on March 14, we might even get official confirmation very soon.
