Xiaomi has unveiled three new phones in the Redmi series in India: Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi 6 Pro. These three are already selling in China and a few other markets, with the Pro variant also going by the name Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite for those who want nothing to do with MIUI.
With the knowledge that the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus won’t be upgraded to Android 9 Pie, it’s obvious that folks who purchase the Redmi 6, Redmi 6A or Redmi 6 Pro will want to know if and when the device will be upgraded to the new OS.

Well, for starters, it’s not a matter of if, but when. Just like we expect at least one major OS upgrade for the Redmi 5, the Redmi 6 trio is also entitled to at least one OS upgrade – and that is Android 9 Pie. As for when, that depends entirely on Xiaomi, but if history is to be consulted, we are looking at a possible Q2 or Q3 2019 release date, at least for the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A.
On the other hand, the fact that the Redmi 6 Pro has some close ties to the Android One-based Mi A2 Lite means it stands a chance of jumping to Android 9 Pie somewhere in Q1 2019, but we cannot guarantee this date will materialize.
What about Android Q? Well, unless drastic changes happen to Xiaomi’s software update tradition, Android 9 Pie will be the only major OS upgrade the trio of Redmi 6 phones will receive.
