In recent leaks from Sony, it is rumored that PS6 is to launch in a Modular design with a detachable disc drive. As reported by Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming, the console will launch primarily as a digital base unit. With this design, Sony is seeking to continue its modular hardware strategy.
You will be able to buy a digital base unit separately and can optionally add a physical media drive later. Analysts note that this strategy will allow you to simplify repairs. This modular strategy is in contrast to what you saw in the 2-SKU strategy of the PS5. There are no confirmed specifications released for the PS6 console, but AMD will be providing hardware for it.
In November, PS5 will turn see its 5th year in market, and the PS6 will continue with its hardware over cloud technology as stated by the Sony President and CEO Hideaki Nishino. GameSpot highlights that even though cloud gaming continues to gain attention, Nishino believes players still prefer "local execution" of the games that engage in physical media and content downloaded to the console directly.
The PS5 gave you two models: a digital edition and a standard model with a disc drive. For PS6, you may see this integrated into one model with an optional drive. However, there are no official announcements about this from Sony yet.
