Apple launched the Powerbeats Pro 2 today, bringing significant updates to its workout-oriented earbuds. The new model adds heart rate monitoring, active noise cancellation (ANC), and a sleeker design while maintaining the signature ear hook for stability during exercise.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 retail for $249.99, matching the price of their predecessor. They're available in four colors: Jet Black, Electric Orange, Hyper Purple, and Quick Sand. The earbuds feature Apple's H2 chip, enabling advanced audio processing and features like Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking.

Heart rate monitoring is the standout addition, using LED optical sensors to track heart rate during workouts. The data syncs with Apple's Health app and integrates with popular fitness platforms including Nike Run Club, Peloton, and Slopes. Notably absent from the compatibility list is Strava, one of the most widely-used running apps.

The new Powerbeats Pro also include active noise cancellation and a Transparency mode for environmental awareness. Apple claims improved sound quality with deeper bass response and clearer highs, though we'll need to test them to verify these claims.

Battery life is rated at up to 7 hours for the earbuds alone, with over 20 hours total when including the charging case. This is actually a slight decrease from the original model's 9-hour earbud battery life. The case now supports wireless charging and uses USB-C for wired charging.

While the heart rate monitoring is an interesting addition, it may be redundant for users who already own an Apple Watch or dedicated fitness tracker. The Powerbeats Pro 2 face stiff competition in the premium earbud market, including options like the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds, which offer superior sound quality and noise cancellation at a higher price point.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 are available to order now, with shipments beginning next week.
