A full Gengar takes preparation: unlocking the right request, researching Gastly, then evolving Haunter with a Linking Cord or trade. Follow the steps below to add this Ghost-type powerhouse to your party.

Unlocking the “Getting to Know the Ghosts” request

Before pursuing Gengar, you must trigger Request 64, “Getting to Know the Ghosts.” This request becomes available after completing the eleventh main-story mission, Scaling Perilous Heights, and having Gastly registered in your Pokédex.

Once those conditions are met, speak with Ward on the central bridge of Jubilife Village to begin the ghostly research.

How to complete Gastly research to earn a Linking Cord

To obtain the Linking Cord needed for evolution, finish Gastly’s Pokédex entry:

Step 1

Seek Gastly in the Crimson Mirelands (Golden Lowlands, Gapejaw Bog, Scarlet Bog, Shrouded Ruins) at night.

Step 2

Capture or defeat Gastly until its research tasks fill out to Rank 10. Tasks include completing specific catches, achieving perfect throws, and winning battles against Gastly of varying levels.

Step 3

Return to Ward in Jubilife Village to receive your Linking Cord once Gastly reaches Rank 10.

How to evolve Haunter into Gengar

After acquiring the Linking Cord, evolve Haunter:

Step 1

Ensure Haunter is in your active party.

Step 2

Open your satchel, select the Linking Cord, then choose Haunter to apply it.

Step 3

Watch as Haunter transforms into Gengar, gaining powerful Ghost- and Poison-type moves.

Alternative method: Trading Haunter

If multiplayer assistance is available, Haunter can evolve via trade:

Step 1

Bring Haunter to Simona’s shop in Jubilife Village.

Step

Select Local or Online Communication and trade Haunter with another player.

Step 3

Haunter will evolve into Gengar immediately upon completion of the trade.

Where to find Haunter and its pre-evolution

Pokémon Locations (night only)
Gastly Golden Lowlands, Gapejaw Bog, Scarlet Bog, Shrouded Ruins (Crimson Mirelands)
Haunter Same as Gastly; evolves at level 25

With its high Special Attack and Speed, Gengar becomes a versatile addition to any team. Whether you prefer solo evolution with the Linking Cord or trading with friends, prepare adequately by researching Gastly and meeting the request requirements. Soon, your Gengar will be casting Shadow Balls and Hypnosis throughout Hisui.

Bringing Gengar into Hisui teams

Gengar excels at hit-and-run tactics, status infliction, and disrupting opponents with moves like Hypnosis and Destiny Bond. Pair it with teammates that can cover its weaknesses to Ground and Ghost, and Gengar becomes an irreplaceable asset on any Arceus adventure.
