Who is Oyuki
Oyuki is introduced as a wandering shamisen (string instrument) performer. But her role is more than an entertainer: she was once a shinobi operative serving under Saitō in the the Yōtei Six. Driven by guilt over her past complicity, she attempted a betrayal. That attempt failed, and she was replaced by her disciple.
Her motivation is one of redemption: she joins Atsu’s cause to help overturn the horrors committed in the name of the Yōtei Six and to atone for her past.
When you meet Oyuki and why
You encounter Oyuki during the arc focusing on the Kitsune and poison production (wolfsbane operation). At this stage:
- Atsu is investigating mysterious poison operations tied to the Kitsune.
- Oyuki offers insider knowledge, guiding Atsu through plots that a normal outsider couldn’t see.
- It is gradually revealed that she has unique leverage in guiding Atsu in fight.
Thus, her introduction is not incidental—it’s tied to a core arc in the story.
All Locations where you meet Oyuki
- Meet her first at the Red Crane Inn. Quest progress allows you to travel with her, however you might have to find her at the Inn later as well.
- Black dye house in Teshio Ridge, near Crimson Ridge.
- Meet her near the Kitsune Altar in the Sentinel Forest. Overlook the outlaw camps with her.

Her role in the Sensei Tale (training) quests
When the storyline gives you access to Sensei Tale or training missions, Oyuki becomes your mentor in the arts of stealth, infiltration, and shinobi techniques.
What she enables through mentorship:
| Ability / Technique | Description | How Oyuki Teaches or Uses It |
|---|---|---|
| Kusarigama Mastery | Complete mastery of the kusarigama, allowing for swift, long-range strikes and precise control. | Demonstrates her skill in duels and trains the protagonist in advanced techniques. |
| Listen Technique | Heightened auditory awareness that highlights nearby enemies and animals (similar to “Ghost Sense”). | Grants and instructs the protagonist in its use after their first encounter. |
| Toxin Resistance | Gradually builds immunity to paralyzing or slowing toxins used by Saito and the Kitsune. | Guides the protagonist through resistance training during joint missions. |
| Stealth Skills | Expert-level stealth maneuvers, including advanced crouching, dashing, and chained assassinations. | Provides lessons as the story progresses, especially during Sensei-focused arcs. |
| Parry and Counter | Refined methods for deflecting and countering blue-glint and otherwise unblockable attacks. | Teaches precise timing and counter strategies during key tutorials. |
| Weapon Synergies | In-depth understanding of weapon matchups—such as how a yari can counter a kusarigama. | Explains theory and demonstrates through live combat training sessions. |
Her training is not just optional flavor—it’s woven into your ability to tackle certain missions where raw strength alone won’t suffice.
Role in other quests beyond the training arc
After her mentorship portion, Oyuki continues to appear across the story in multiple capacities:
- She joins joint missions with Atsu, especially when infiltration or insider knowledge is needed.
- She helps expose impostors or traitors, especially when the enemy uses mimicry or deception.
- She provides strategic or logistic support in rescue or infiltration operations.
- Her presence often becomes mandatory or very helpful in missions that rely on internal networks or scheming rather than front-line combat.

How meeting her helps in the overall Ghost of Yotei progression
Meeting and allying with Oyuki is essential for multiple threads of progression. Here’s how:
Access to hidden knowledge
Because she once was the Kitsune, she knows secret paths, hidden plots, and betrayals that are invisible to an outsider. That helps you unravel the deeper schemes of Saitō and his lieutenants.
Skill growth and capability unlocking
Through her training, you get techniques required for stealth and infiltration segments. Without her, some missions become much harder or inaccessible.
Expanded mission routes/narrative routes
Some quests branch or require her involvement to unlock alternative approaches (e.g. infiltration vs direct assault). Her alliance broadens your options.
Emotional/narrative anchor
Her backstory, remorse, and aims give Atsu (and the player) moral context. Her redemption arc adds emotional weight to the struggle against the Yōtei Six.
Bridging to later confrontations
As the game advances toward the major lieutenants (Dragon, Spider, Oni, etc.), many of those missions deal with deception, hidden paths, or traitors. Oyuki’s involvement becomes indispensable in navigating those mid-to-late game complexities.
In short: without meeting Oyuki, several core arcs—especially those involving Kitsune, betrayal, infiltration, and hidden schemes—would be significantly crippled or much harder to navigate.
Oyuki is more than a supporting character—her story, wisdom, and presence are woven into the core structure of Ghost of Yotei. By meeting and allying with her, you gain access to richer abilities, deeper storylines, and an evolving relationship that transforms the sensei tales and the main campaign in meaningful ways.
