What to know
- The text-to-video AI model is available as a standalone tool on Sora.com.
- Sora is powered by a new model called Sora Turbo and is available for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.
- ChatGPT Plus users can create up to 50 ten-second long videos at 480p (or fewer five-second videos at 720p). ChatGPT Pro users get 10x more usage, up to 20-second long videos at 1080p.
- Sora also includes other helpful tools like Storyboards, a few remix tools, and can create videos in different aspect ratios.
After much delay and eager anticipation, OpenAI has finally released Sora - its video-generating AI tool that lets you create and edit videos with nothing more than a prompt. The text-to-video tool is also powered by an updated version of Sora, called Sora Turbo. Here's everything you need to know about Sora, who can access it, how to use it, and what it can do in its current iteration.
Sora Features, Availability, and Pricing
Available on Sora.com, the text-to-video model is out wherever ChatGPT is available, except the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area. The company took the opportunity to launch Sora on Day 3 of its 12 Days of OpenAI event series that has become the talk of the town and has brought much-needed attention to other OpenAI updates and releases.
ChatGPT users with a Plus subscription get 1000 credits that can be used to generate up to 50 videos at 480p that are 10 seconds long, or fewer 720p videos that are 5 seconds long.
But if you have the $200/month ChatGPT Pro subscription (released last week), you get 10x more usage, 500 priority videos, and a higher 1080p resolution for each video that can be up to 20 seconds in length. The videos can be generated in widescreen, vertical, or square aspect ratios. Pro subscribers can also generate up to 5 videos simultaneously and download videos without a watermark.
Sora also includes additional helpful video generation features like 'storyboards' that can take a sequence of prompts and turn them into videos as well as turn photos into videos. There's also a bunch of 'remix' tools that allow you to blend, re-cut, remix, and loop videos.
OpenAI mentions that "all Sora-generated videos will include C2PA metadata to indicate they're made with AI."
The game changing GenAI video model had been in the works for quite some time and is OpenAI's longest in-development project to date.
