Staying true to their word, the software team at OnePlus just released the Android Q beta for their latest devices, the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7. Not only that, they have also shared the kernel sources (at GitHub) for the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7.

Clearly, these are not stable builds, suitably called Developer Preview version, so they do come with some baggage. It’s meant for the developers to test their apps in anticipation for Android Q, but yes, if you want to play around, you download the Android Q beta on your device and install it manually.

Here’s a list of issues with Android Q beta ROM that OnePlus shared in their announcement post. (The list may not be exhaustive, of course.)

  1. Ambient Display is not working
  2. System stability issues
  3. Cannot send SMS when VoLTE is on
  4. Navigation gesture is not working
  5. Recovery mode doesn’t work
  6. Some apps may not function as expected when running on this Developer preview release
  7. Issue with MTP that doesn’t allow you to copy rollback file from PC to Phone

How to install Android Q beta

Note: Make sure you have a backup of everything you may need as this will delete everything on the device.

  1. Download the update file from above from the software version column above.
  2. Transfer the update file to your OnePlus 7/7 Pro.
  3. Open the Settings app on your OnePlus 7/7 Pro.
  4. Go to System updates, and then tap the icon in the top right, then select local upgrade.
  5. Tap on the update file you transferred above.
  6. Tap on Immediately upgrade > System upgrade to 100%.
  7. Tap on the Reboot system now.
  8. The device will reboot to recovery mode automatically to clear user data (factory reset).
