HMD Global’s nostalgia continues with the Nokia 9 PureView, U.S. availability confirmed

Nokia 9 PureView

At the Mobile World Congress 2017, HMD Global sent us years back into the early 2000s, giving diehard Nokia fans a treat of what has gone go down in memory lane as one of the most popular phones – the Nokia 3310. A year later, the Finnish company was at it again, this time with the Nokia 8110 or simply the banana phone.

Another year later, at the MWC 2019, HMD is once again sending those nostalgic thrills down many fans’ spines with yet another device with a familiar moniker – the Nokia 9 PureView. Prior to this, the PureView tag had appeared on the Symbian-powered Nokia 808 and Windows Mobile-based Nokia Lumia 1020 that boasted a massive 41MP camera, the first of its kind on a smartphone.

Given that both PureView devices from years back had their main focus on photography, the newest member in town, the Nokia 9 PureView, is treading on the same lines thanks to an outrageous five-lens camera array on the back comprising two color and three monochrome lenses.

As usual, HMD isn’t putting lots of emphasis on the Nokia 9 PureView despite it obviously being the company’s 2019 most premium offering. We saw it happening with the low-key entry into the market of the Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco, so it doesn’t surprise us that the latest member is going through the same.

Even so, it’s worth noting that the Nokia 9 PureView is the best phone from HMD at the moment despite one or two shortcomings. For starters, it runs a year-old processor, but this chipset is no slouch either. The 3300mAh battery may appear small, but with Adaptive battery, you are guaranteed of longer intervals between charging.

Speaking of, the phone can also be charged wirelessly and further includes IP67 dust and water resistance, USB-C, and an in-display fingerprint scanner, among other premium features. Like the immediate Nokia flagship phone, the Nokia 9 PureView lacks a 3.5mm audio jack, but the box includes a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter.

Here are the rest of the Nokia 9 PureView specs:

  • 5.99-inch QHD+ pOLED display screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 5
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor
  • 6GB RAM
  • 128GB non-expandable storage
  • Penta-lens main camera: 2 x 12MP (RGB lenses, f/1.82 aperture) + 3 x 12MP (monochrome lenses, f/1.82 aperture)
  • 20MP front camera, display flash
  • 3320mAh battery
  • Android 9 Pie (Android One)
  • Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Qi wireless charging, IP67, 3 mics with spatial recording, NFC, in-display fingerprint scanner, etc.Nokia 9 PureView-1

As you can see, HMD Global skimped on a few specs, but this does not in no way take away the nostalgia that is the PureView. In fact, the few corners the company cut have played in favor of the consumer, where the Nokia 9 PureView can be had for €600 in Europe or about $700 in the U.S.

Although global availability has been confirmed, when exactly the PureView will set foot in the U.S. and Europe remains unknown, but we should find out pretty soon.
