Google’s Nexus devices have always received that extra dose of special attention from everyone when it comes to latest Android updates. And although it took a while, the Nexus 9 has finally made the cut to LineageOS, with the tablet receiving the latest build of LineageOS 14.1 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat.
Like the rest of the devices supported by LineageOS, Nexus 9 too only supports Nightly builds at the moment. This may come with a few irksome bugs at first, but they shouldn’t have any major impact on day-to-day performance.
If you’re not familiar with the story, LineageOS came to fruition after Cyanogen Inc. shut down all of its services. And it has been a good, solid six months ever since Lineage took over the CyanogenMod devices. There still remains a large number of devices which are yet to ported to LineageOS, but a good majority of popular devices are now supported on the custom ROM.

Google has supported the Nexus 9 from its early days with Lollipop till Android 7.1.1 Nougat. We may not ever see a Nexus device in our lives again, but thanks to custom ROM initiatives like LineageOS, Resurrection Remix, etc. we get to keep these devices running well over their shelf life.
