What to know
- Netflix has discontinued casting from mobile apps to most modern TVs and streaming devices, effective late November 2025.
- Exceptions apply only to legacy Chromecast models (1st-3rd gen, Ultra) and specific TVs, but require ad-free plans starting at $17.99/month.
- Users must now navigate via TV remotes using native Netflix apps for better control and quality.
- The change impacts travelers and Chromecast with Google TV owners most, with no prior announcement.
Netflix's updated mobile app (released mid-November 2025) has removed the Cast button for devices with native apps and remotes, such as Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, and most smart TVs. This means you are now forced to use the Netflix TV app, which Netflix claims improves the experience through optimized navigation and higher-quality streams.
There was no announcement for it. Netflix simply updated its help page. Reports from users on Reddit confirm the rollout began around November 10, affecting both Android and iOS without warning. And no one is happy.

Affected Devices and Plans
Casting now works solely on older hardware lacking remotes:
- Chromecast (1st, 2nd, 3rd gen), Chromecast Ultra
- Google Nest Hub Smart Display
- Select Vizio TVs and Compal TVs with Google Cast

Ad-supported plans ($7.99/month) block casting entirely, even on legacy devices, pushing upgrades to Standard ($17.99) or Premium tiers. Devices on different Wi-Fi networks also fail.
| Plan | Monthly Price | Casting on Legacy Devices | Casting on Modern TVs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with Ads | $7.99 | No | No |
| Standard | $17.99 | Yes | No |
| Premium | $24.99+ | Yes | No |
Why Netflix Made This Move
The decision prioritizes native apps for enhanced data collection, ad delivery, and UI control, following the 2019 AirPlay removal for similar quality reasons. Netflix states low usage justified phasing it out to focus on high-value features, though users decry lost phone-based search convenience. Travelers are also going to face big issues in hotels or Airbnbs when there is no login access.
Like most users who relied on casting for some convenience, one can only say: Thank you, Netflix. But that's the last straw.
