Motorola Moto M2 gets Wi-Fi certification ahead of launch

It’s been more than a year since the Motorola Moto M was unveiled back in November 2016 and while a significant number of leaks and rumors surfaced sometime last year in regards to the phone’s successor, nothing materialized and instead, we got the Moto X4. Now, it appears this will be the year the Moto M finally gets a successor, which we’ve tentatively baptized the Motorola Moto M2.

Moto M2 specs and features

  • MediaTek Helio P20 processor
  • Android 8.0 Oreo

Last June, a device believed to be the Moto M2 popped up on multiple platforms, including the Wi-Fi Alliance, carrying model number XT1902. At the time, the device was cleared with Android 7.1.1 Nougat and a MediaTek MT6797 chipset, otherwise known as Helio X20. If you know something about MediaTek chipsets, you’ll know that the X series is the company’s flagship chipsets, yet we didn’t expect this type of processor in the Moto M2.

Now, in a similar appearance on the Wi-Fi Alliance, the same device carrying model number XT1902 has been cleared for release, this time with a MediaTek MT6757 chipset, otherwise known as Helio P20. Given that the Moto M came with a Helio P10 chipset (Helio P15 in India), it makes sense that the Moto M2 should be equipped with a Helio P20 chipset.

The WFA listing also reveals that the Moto M2 will be powered by Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, which is expected of any Motorola device that comes out this year. Other than these details, there isn’t much we can gather from the listing, however, based on the OG model’s configurations, you can expect about 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.

Since Motorola has already jumped to the 18:9 design, we can only hope that the Moto M2 will follow suit. In terms of size, it’s likely that the M2 will take some notes from the Moto G6 Plus with respect to the G5S Plus, where the latter’s 5.5-inch screen was upped to a bigger 5.9-inch FHD+ panel on the former, but we cannot guarantee this.

Features such as fast battery charging, USB-C port, 3.5mm audio jack, fingerprint scanner, Face unlock, and possibly a dual-lens camera are also expected.

Moto M2 price and release date

  • No price details
  • Launch may happen soon

Motorola’s failure to grace the MWC 2018 event made it even harder to guess the company’s next moves. We had gotten used to seeing several releases at every MWC event, but this time around, the launch of the Moto G6 and Moto E5 series had to wait until mid-April 2018.

In fact, things get literally unpredictable when you consider that the Moto M2 was, essentially, supposed to be out in late 2017. Furthermore, the fact that there haven’t been many details/leaks about the M2 could mean the launch isn’t any close.

On the brighter side, the phone’s appearance on the Wi-Fi Alliance shows that Motorola is indeed working on it, probably with a launch event coming in the next few weeks. Also, the fact that the Moto M’s successor is long overdue could mean Motorola may launch the M2 sooner than later.

However, it’s worth noting that while we believe the XT1902-2 is the Moto M2, we don’t have any other major proof that this is actually the case.
