A little while back Motorola released the Moto G, the device targeted the budget users who were hoping for premium hardware at a low price. The device panned out well and stood among the hot selling smartphones beyond its range. Moto G offered a premium hardware topped with the latest android OS Kitkat out-of-the box. The device put into shame, many of the local manufacturers (here in India) who are offering devices at sub INR 15,000.

Now, officially Moto G has got a smaller brother Moto E. Moto E was officially launched recently with decent features at a remarkable price tag. This little smartphone running KitKat OS was launched at a mind-blowing  INR 6999 price tag. This surely depicts that Motorola is striving hard to offer its users, quality devices at affordable prices for all ranges. And looking at the sales of these devices, it is sure that this plan is working for Motorola.

The Moto G and Moto E are from different price segments, one from the sub INR 15,000 and other from sub INR 7000. It is not fair to compare these both devices, but we’re doing it to provide a great insight of the features and performances of the devices at their respective grounds. So here we go with the in-depth comparison of  Moto E and Moto G.

BUILD QUALITY

Moto E

The Moto E’s rear panel is curved and is made of a soft polycarbonate shell, which is comfortable to hold. The front panel sports two speaker grilles on top and bottom with a chrome tone. Moto E comes with curvy edges and chunky looks. The phone with the dimensions 124.8 x 64.8 x 12.3 mm weighs 142 gms and feels comfortable in hand. The device is a bit thick in this era of slim phones though. However for the sub INR 7000 device, the thickness and size are never the biggest concerns.

Moto G

The Moto G’s rear panel is smoothly curved and is made of a rubberized plastic which feels great in hand. The device features a water repellent coating for protection against water spills, but jumping into pool with it would definitely kill it.The device is a bit chunky for the price segment where slimmer devices are ruling the reign. The phone with the dimensions 129.9 x 65.9 x 11.6 mm weighs 143 gms which is OKish.

Both the devices packs the similar design and looks with a minor changes here and there. The Moto E is a bit smaller and thicker in size compared to Moto G. But when compared to other devices on the market, both the brothers are chunkier. Both devices are made of more or less plastic and poly carbonate shells which are quite comfortable to hold in hand. And the rear panel is swappable on both the devices, so you can switch to another color panel that matches your dress or personality.

display-comparision

DISPLAY

Moto E

The Moto E sports a 4.3 inch Capacitive touch screen with a 540 x 960 pixel resolution which brings the pixel density to 256 ppi which is great for a budget device. The display offers fairly well saturated colors and good contrast. Motorola has used Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the new Moto E, which protects it from scratches. This feature gives edge to Moto E over the other devices in its range. The viewing angles are great for normal usage and display is bright enough for daily usage.

Moto G

The Moto G sports a 4.5 inch IPS LCD Capacitive touch screen with a 720p HD display which brings out a pixel density of nearly 326 ppi which is better than other devices in its price range. The display is bright and the colors produced on the screen are vibrant. The viewing angle are great on this device. Motorola has used Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the Moto G, which protects it from scratches.

Moto E comes with a qHD display and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection is definitely the best display you’ll get on a 7000 rupee. Moto E has definitely an edge over its competitors in terms of screen. On the other hand Moto G is slightly bigger than Moto E but carries a 720p display which is a bragging point for a 4.5 inch device. Both the devices has a good display when compared to their price section. However if you are into watching videos and browsing internet regularly, Moto G is the best bargain. Nevertheless Moto E satisfies the budget users definitely.

CAMERA

Moto E

Moto E packs a 5.0 MP camera, but lacks LED flash support as well as front camera. The camera is good for capturing few pics every now and then but it is not great for serious camera junkies. It will suffice the purpose of regularly posting pictures on social networking sites though. The camera cannot be used in low light conditions and HDR option is also not available on Moto E. Camera is one of the few downsides of this device, but is an inevitable strategy the company should take for cost cutting.

Moto G

The Moto G sports a 5 MP rear camera accompanied by an LED flash. The device also packs a 1.3 MP front-facing camera. The camera is capable of taking some good pictures, but in low light conditions it fails to reach the expectations. The rear camera has auto focus functionality as well as HDR option. The device can also shoot videos at 720p resolution at a rate of 30 fps. The front camera can take some good selfies but not that the company can boast off.

The Camera section is the Achilles heel for both the devices. Moto E has a tiny 5 MP camera that works good in most occasions but the lack of LED flash light limits its functionality to well  lit conditions. This is a setback but one of the ways to cut the cost and most budget users can live with the Moto E’s Camera. Coming to Moto G, it provides some good features like HDR, 720p recording and panoramic mode. Moto G’s camera can take some good shots and comes handy all the way.

user-interface

USER INTERFACE

Moto E

Moto E comes with the latest version of android i.e Kitkat 4.4.2. The android interface is pretty much close to stock and user can experience pure vanilla flavor in their hands. The device comes with a few preloaded apps though like Motorola Assist for intelligent control options and Motorola Migrate that makes moving from older device easier. It also comes with Motorola Alert, an app that is designed to share your location with your friends and family.

Moto G

Moto G comes with the Kitkat 4.4.2 pre-installed . The android interface is pretty much close to stock and user can experience pure vanilla flavor in their hands. Few apps are preloaded in the device like Motorola Assist for intelligent control options and Motorola Migrate that makes moving from older device easier. It also comes with Motorola Alert, an app that is designed to share your location with your friends and family.

Both the device are pretty much on the same ground as the other in terms of Software and User interface. With the near Stock android and no bloatware, user can experience the best android essence. Going with the reputation of the company, we can expect a few more Android updates in the future.

PERFORMANCE

Moto E

The Moto E features a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz, and is backed up by the Adreno 302 GPU and 1 GB of RAM. The device offers a decent hardware for a low cost device. The device can perform all basic tasks like web browsing, Video streaming etc.., but understandably it struggles with processor intensive apps and multitasking. But it isn’t that bad, you can even play Asphalt 8 with minor frame drops.

Moto G

Moto G offers a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, which is backed with the Adreno 305 GPU, along with 1 GB RAM. With the powerful specs Moto G performs great with the Processor intensive apps and high end games. The device gives a snappier processing power which runs almost all apps and games smoothly without any lag. For the price tag, Moto G offers great performance than most of the devices in the same price range.

While the specs and processing power of the Moto G is stronger, both devices offer a decent overall experience, which is definitely beyond the performance of other smartphones in their respective pricing range. Moto E gives a great overall experience with smooth performance most of the times. Of course it struggles with some multitasking apps, which is much anticipated.

storage-analysis

STORAGE

Moto E

Moto E comes with a 4GB internal storage onboard, out of which just 2.2GB is available to the user and the rest is occupied by the Operating System and apps. But Moto E is provided with a Micro SD slot through which you can expand your storage up to 32GB. You can transfer most of the apps and multimedia files to the SD card to free up your device.

Moto G

Moto G disappoints in the storage section as it comes with a fixed memory of 8GB/16GB. So there no room for expansion and you have to strictly maintain your files within the given storage. The storage space is also depleted by the Android OS, so a part of the storage space is available for the users. But OTG support is a bit relief for carrying around some extra storage.

Moto E has a heads up in the storage section with the availability of the external microSD card. Moto G suffers from limited storage space, but 16 GB is enough for most of the users. If you feel the storage is downside of the Moto G, always remember of the OTG facility the device provides.

battery-performance

BATTERY

Moto E

Moto E comes with a non-removable Li-Ion 1980 mAh battery which can easily last for a day at normal usage, considering the specs of the device. So no need of carrying the charger wherever you go.

Moto G

Moto G comes with a non-removable Li-Ion 2070 mAh battery which can provide a optimum battery life and talktime. The battery could last for a day at nominal usage.

The battery on Moto G provides more battery power compared to Moto E. But considering the hardware on both the devices, battery life of both the devices are comparable.

FINAL VERDICT

Motorola launched both the Moto G and Moto E in India in between a gap of around 90 days only and yet the response to these devices has been great. Both the devices are the kings of their own price classes and clearly outsmarts their competitors by a long way. It is purely the user’s choice on deciding between these two devices. Spending few extra bucks on the Moto G gets you a device with a higher resolution and a faster processing package. On the other hand, if you are low on budget, then Moto E is your best buy with some great features and the availability of microSD expansion which the Moto G lacks. So grab either of these devices and feel the power of the budget Smartphones.
