The low-end budget smartphone market is a hot battle ground in developing countries, specially in India where local manufacturers and those from China, Japan and Korea are all battling to win the crown of best budget smartphone. But honestly, there can’t be a winner here as new phones are launched in this price range every other week.

The Micromax Canvas Pep is the latest to join the ground. The device features a 4.5-inch FWVGA display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB of internal storage (expandable) and 1700 mAh battery. As for the camera, the phone packs a 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a VGA unit on front.

Canvas Pep looks a downer though on the software part as it will ship with Android 4.4.2 KitKat and a handful of pre-installed apps (bloatware) like Snapdeal, Saavn, True Caller, etc.

The phone is priced INR 5,999 ($96) and will be competing directly with Android One devices, Asus Zenfone C and Xiaomi Redmi 1S among the major brands, but there are plenty of other devices from various local manufacturers to give a tough competition in this price range.

Micromax Canvas Pep will go on sale starting today with Pristine White and Mystic Blue colour options.
