In Where Winds Meet, Miaoshan (also known as “Tian Ying”) is more than just another boss — he’s a culmination of the Qinghe region’s narrative and combat design.

You won’t encounter him until you’ve completed major exploration goals and a special legacy quest, and once you do, you’re faced with one of the toughest fights in the game.

This guide will walk you through how to unlock the fight, overview the mechanics, and provide a step-by-step strategy to beat each phase reliably.

Tian Ying location: Where Winds Meet

You’ll enter a hidden multi-room dungeon beneath the Buddha’s Light Pagoda at Halo Peak in the Qinghe region. This area features rope-bridge sequences, light-mirror puzzles, puppet guardians, and ends in the Thousand-Buddha Cavern, where Miaoshan awaits. You will fight him during the Promised Light quest.

How to defeat Tian Ying

Here is how you can find and defeat Miaoshan to unlock mystic skills:

Step 1

Progress through Bodhi Sea → Palace of Annals → Halo Peak until you complete the main Miaoshan also know as Tian Ying encounter.

Step 2

Accumulate 6,000 exploration points in Qinghe by opening chests, completing quests, and exploring new areas.

Phase 1: Staff and ranged wave attacks

Step 3

Enter the Halo Peak journal campaign. Reach the final room for the Miaoshan encounter. Defeat Lucky Seventeen in the campaign and acquire the needed Jade Crystal.

Step 4

As the fight opens, Miaoshan immediately tests you with a three-hit sword combo. Hold your guard and look for the end of the third slash. This final strike has the longest recovery window—your first safe punishment opportunity.

Step 5

When Miaoshan lifts his staff, and it begins to glow gold, he’s preparing a powerful shockwave that can deal massive damage. To counter this safely, immediately interrupt his channeling and knock him to the ground by using Meridian Touch.

Step 6

Your goal is not just to beat him—your main focus is reaching Phase 2 and forcing the spinning-kick sequence.

Phase 2: Close-quarters monk style & sand statues

Step 7

Once Phase 1 is completed, the 2nd Phase starts. In this phase, a Buddha statue comes into play. Miaoshan floats, and the statue sends out powerful AoE attacks, to avoid these, stick to the side of the arena.

Step 8

One of his central Phase 2 attacks is a rapid spinning kick move. This is the exact attack you need to deflect to fill the “eye” meter on the top right side of the health bar for the Free Morph unlock.

Step 9

He summons sand-based attacks, which are mixed with close-range melee, so don’t always stay too far; be ready to deflect.

Step 10

After you’ve filled the eye meter, you can continue dealing damage normally. Use any remaining combo opportunities to knock him down or break his posture before he transitions to the next phase.

Phase 3: Invisibility, teleports and assassination strings

Step 11

In Phase 3, Miaoshan's mask comes off and the name changes to Tian Ying. He will summon three sand clones.

Step 12

Rather than focusing on the clones, focus on parrying the real Tian Ying: each successful parry on him removes one clone.

Step 13

Once Tian Ying is defeated, the Free Morph skill unlocks automatically.

Tian Ying boss fight tips

• Upgrade your weapon and gear before the fight — damage output matters a lot especially in Phase 2.
• Unlock and max relevant Mystic Arts early (e.g., Meridian Touch, Celestial Seize, Cloud Steps) so you have tools for interruption and mobility.
• Stock up on healing items and antidotes before you attempt the fight — treat this as an endurance challenge, not just a damage race.
• Practice parry timing in prior boss encounters or in trial mode if available — Phase 3 of Miaoshan punishes even minor mistakes severely.
• Consider enabling auto-parry (if available) for Phase 3 if you struggle with reaction timing — some players found this alleviates the frustration.
