As is the norm every month, Google have updated the Android distribution numbers showing which version of Android powers what percentage of devices, and Android 4.1 has made a jump to 2.7%, up from 1.2% exactly a month ago. Gingerbread remains dominant two years after its release, powering 53.9% of all Android devices (down from 55.8%).
As for Ice Cream Sandwich, the version of Android that most recent devices have been running on, the share has jumped up to 25.8% from 21% a month ago, which is quite a respectable growth thanks to manufacturers finally getting around to updating their older devices. Older versions like Froyo are still powering some devices around the world, collectively taking a total of 15.5% (yes, even Android 1.5 Cupcake is refusing to die).
It is sad to see that the uptake for Android 4.1 is going so slow, and with Android 4.2 already on the horizon, the fragmentation is not going away anytime soon.
