How feeding animals currently works in Hytale
In early access, feeding animals influences movement behavior only. Animals may approach food sources, but they won’t become tamed, loyal, or breed as a result.
There are two main ways feeding affects animals:
- Holding food items to temporarily lure them
- Placing a Feed Bag to passively attract them to one location
Both methods are situational, but the Feed Bag is far more practical for base-building and farming.
How to craft Feed Bag in Hytale
Before the Feed Bag appears as a recipe, you need to progress through basic crafting.
Step 1: Craft basic Workbench
Open your pocket crafting menu and craft a basic Workbench using 4x tree trunks and 3x stone.
Step 2: Craft Farmer's Workbench
Interact with the Workbench and craft a Farmer’s Workbench using 6x tree trunks and 20x plant fiber.
The Farmer’s Workbench unlocks all early farming-related recipes, including the Feed Bag.
Step 3: Craft Feed Bag
Open the Farmer’s Workbench and navigate to the farming section. Craft the Feed Bag using the following materials:
- Wheat x10
- Any vegetable x5
- Any fruit x5
- Essence of Life x10
Essence of Life is obtained by destroying plants and interacting with natural world objects, so it’s usually available by the time you reach farming progression.
How to feed animals using the Feed Bag
Equip the Feed Bag in your hotbar and place it on the ground where you want animals to gather.
Wait as nearby passive animals slowly move toward the Feed Bag over time. Guide animals into fenced areas, pens, or controlled spaces once they gather near the bag.

Feeding animals by holding food
You can also influence animals by holding food items in your hand.
