The grappling hook in Green Hell is a story item that lets you reach otherwise inaccessible areas, like the Lambda 2 site. Once you have it, it stays on your backpack and can’t be dropped or used in combat; it only activates at specific climbing spots scattered around the map.

If you don’t have the grappling hook yet, check out our Where to Find the Grappling Hook in Green Hell guide.

Where climbing points are

Climbing points are always near tall cliffs or rock faces and are easy to spot in the world: look for a log or beam sticking out over the edge, with thick red ivy hanging from it. On the map, these spots are marked with a small grappling hook icon, so you can plan your route ahead of time.

Common climbing points include:

  • The cliff near the Drug Facility (needed to reach the Airstrip).
  • The rock face leading up to Lambda 2.
  • Various high ledges around the main island that shortcut long jungle paths.

How to attach the grappling hook

To climb up from below, stand at the base facing the red-ivy log, equip the grappling hook, aim slightly upward at the branch or beam above it, and throw the hook. If it latches, the rope will attach; if not, adjust your aim higher and try again.

Once the rope is set, approach it and press the interact button (E on PC, or equivalent) to start climbing up.

Common mistakes and tips

  • Hook falls off – This usually happens if you aim directly at the red‑ivy log instead of a branch above it; try aiming slightly higher and to the side.
  • Can’t interact with the rope – Make sure you’re close enough to the rope and that the hook is properly latched; if the rope is swinging wildly, wait a second for it to settle.
  • Story progression – Some areas (like Lambda 2) are blocked until you have the grappling hook, so if a path seems impossible, check your map for a hook icon nearby.

Climb with ease

The grappling hook is a simple but essential tool in Green Hell that opens up the map’s vertical paths. Once you know to aim at a branch just above the red‑ivy log (not at the log itself), attaching and climbing becomes straightforward, letting you reach key story locations and save time on long detours.
