What to know

  • The “fly” effect comes from rapidly chaining double‑jumps with the building drone, not from a true flight mode.
  • You need the Building Drone unlocked (Rank 4 with Clever Robotics + “Autonomous Constructor” contract).
  • Movement is done with WASD (forward/back/left/right), Space (ascend), and Ctrl (descend) while the drone is active.
  • This is widely considered a bug/exploit and may be patched in a future update, so use it while it still works.

In StarRupture, the Building Drone is designed to let you hover above your base in a top-down view, placing structures and rails from a distance. Normally, pressing C in build mode locks your character in place while the drone takes over, letting you fly freely using WASD, Space, and Ctrl. A popular exploit, often called “fly mode,” combines this with your character’s double-jump: jump, launch the drone mid-air, release, jump again, and repeat, allowing you to soar high above the ground and traverse the map.

How to use the “fly” exploit (double‑jump + drone)

This method lets you move around the map like a floating camera, useful for scouting or just getting around quickly.

Step 1: Jump and activate Drone mode

Press the jump button twice to gain height, then while in mid-air, press C (or your assigned Drone button) to freeze in the air and enter Drone Mode.

Step 2: Repeat the process

Press C (or your assigned button) to deactivate Drone Mode, quickly jump again to gain height, then reactivate Drone Mode to freeze in mid-air and restore your energy.

To safely return to the ground, deactivate Drone Mode and let yourself fall, then press the jump button twice just before landing.

Using the Drone normally

For the standard, intended drone experience (no exploits needed), you can unlock and operate the Building Drone by completing the required contracts and setting up a Drone Station connected to Storage Depots. Once activated, the drone lets you fly around, place structures, lay rails, and even repair machinery, all while your character stays in place. When this “fly” trick might break

  • The developers are aware of the double‑jump + drone exploit, and it’s expected to be patched in a future update.
  • If a Rupture wave is active or imminent, drone mode may be disabled until the wave passes.
  • On some servers or after updates, the C key might not work reliably to enter drone mode; restarting the game or server can help.

Should you use the fly exploit in StarRupture

The “fly” trick is a clever use of the Building Drone, but it’s technically a bug and may be patched at any time. It’s fun for quick scouting or base movement, but the standard drone, floating camera plus remote building, is already a huge convenience for normal gameplay.
