Managing inventory becomes a real challenge once exploration and combat ramp up. The Backpack is one of the most practical early-to-mid game upgrades in Hytale, giving you more room to loot, craft, and travel without constant trips back to storage.
How to unlock the Backpack recipe
Step 1: Craft a Tier Two Crafting Bench
You must first upgrade your crafting station. This bench is essential to unlock more advanced recipes, including the Backpack.
Step 2: Gather bench materials
To craft the Tier Two Crafting Bench, collect:
- 30 Copper Bars
- 20 Iron Bars
- 20 Lumen Scraps
Once placed, the Backpack recipe becomes available automatically.

Step 3: Collect Iron Bars
Iron is one of the more common mid-game resources. Mine iron ore underground and smelt it into bars using a furnace. You’ll need 8 Iron Bars specifically for the Backpack.

Step 4: Obtain Medium Hide
Medium Hide is dropped by certain hostile or aggressive animals, most commonly wolves. You can also occasionally find Medium Leather directly inside loot chests, which skips the processing step.

Step 5: Convert Medium Hide into Medium Leather
If you obtain Medium Hide, place it on a Tanning Rack. This process converts the hide into Medium Leather, which is required for crafting.

You’ll need a total of 16 Medium Leather and 8 Iron ingots to unlock backpack.
How to craft and use the Backpack
Step 6: Craft the Backpack spawner
With all materials ready, craft the Backpack using the Tier Two Crafting Bench. This creates a Backpack spawner button in inventory.

Step 7: Activate the Backpack
Click the Backpack spawner in your inventory. Once activated, it permanently adds nine extra inventory slots to your character.

There’s no equipment slot management involved—the storage increase applies instantly.
Backpack upgrades you can unlock later
The basic Backpack is only the beginning. As you progress further into Hytale, you can upgrade the Backpack two more times. Each upgrade expands your inventory even further, making late-game exploration and resource gathering far more efficient.
