Understanding Mahjong in Where Winds Meet

The game is a typical cards game where instead of cards you have tiles. There are three suits - Bamboo (lines), Ten Thousand (characters) and Dot.

The goal of the game is to create Tile Combinations. These are:

  • Chi - Three consecutive cards (like two, three, four)
  • Pong - Three of a kind (two, two, two, or three, three, three, etc.)
  • Kong - Four of a kind (two, two, two, two, etc.)

To win at Mahjong, you need:

  • 4 groups - Each group can be a Pong (three of a kind) or a Chi (straight of three). Alternatively, you can also have Kong (four of a kind).
  • 1 Pair - Two cards of the same rank (at least two suits)

How to begin

Each player is given 13 tiles.

At the start, each player must declare one suit (Dots, Bamboo, or Ten Thousand) as the Missing Suit.

Tiles from this Missing suit will not count towards your points. Each player must first clear their hand of this suit.

The dealer is selected randomly. He discards first and he also gets an extra tile. After that, the turn goes clockwise.

Turn by Turn

When it's your turn, you can either draw a new tile or pick up a tile discarded by others. Your goal is to create Tile Combinations (as mentioned above).

How to score and win

When you have three of a kind, you'll get the option to Pong and reveal these tiles on your side.

Similarly, when you have four of a kind, you'll get the option to Kong and reveal these tiles on your side. If you like, you can keep these tiles to yourself and not reveal them.

The first player to complete 4 groups and 1 pair wins the game.

If no one satisfies the win conditions and the deck is emptied, the tiles revealed and the tiles you hold are taken as your score. The player with the highest points wins.
