What does muting do?
Muting is the lighter version of unfollowing a person. You will still stay on their followers’ list, but you won’t see any of their posts. This way, not only would you get to save face, but you’d also save yourself from the pain of seeing irrelevant posts.

How to mute someone’s posts?
If you’re already convinced with the idea, you’d be happy to know that muting is a rather straightforward process and can be achieved in a couple of minutes. To mute someone, first, go to their profile and tap on ‘Following’ below the profile info.
Now, tap on ‘Mute’.
Finally, hit the toggle beside ‘Posts.’ That’s it, you won’t see any posts from the user in the future.

How to mute someone’s stories?
Similar to posts, you can also go ahead and mute someone’s Instagram stories. The process is identical to the one we discussed above. Simply go to the user’s profile, tap on the ‘Following’ button (as shown above), go to ‘Mute,’ and tap on the toggle adjacent to ‘Stories.’ Voila! You won’t see the user’s stories on your Insta dashboard anymore.

Would they know that you’ve muted them?
Instagram is perfectly aware of the sociological inconvenience some of its users face, which instigated them to introduce the option of muting in the first place. So, no, Instagram will not let them know that you muted their posts and/or stories.
Would they still see your posts?
The people you’ve muted will continue to see your posts and stories as usual. As it’s completely different from unfollowing a person, it doesn’t change the way they view your profile.
How to unmute someone on Instagram?
Missing the clingy colleague already? Unmuting a muted person is just as manageable. To unmute, go to their profile and tap on ‘Following.’ Now, tap on ‘Mute’ and hit the toggle beside ‘Posts’ or ‘Stories.’ The user’s stories/posts would once again start popping up on your dashboard/feed.
