What to know

  • Heavy Hide mainly comes from killing large animals such as bears and other big creatures.
  • It can also drop from other large animals in Zone 4 and similar high‑level areas.
  • Once you have Heavy Hide, you turn it into Heavy Leather at a Tanning Rack.
  • Heavy Leather is used to craft mid‑tier armor, bags, and other gear.

Heavy Hide is one of the three main hide types in Hytale (along with Light and Medium Hide), and it’s essential for upgrading your gear beyond the early game. The game doesn’t give explicit hints on where to find it, so knowing which mobs drop it and where to farm them makes a big difference.

Where Heavy Hide comes from

Heavy Hide is dropped by large animals, with bears being the most reliable source. In practice, you’ll want to head to forested or mountainous biomes where bears spawn, as they are the primary mob that drops Heavy Hide.

Other large animals (like big boars, wolves, or similar beasts in Zone 4) can also drop Heavy Hide, so any area with a high density of large creatures works well for farming it.

How to farm Heavy Hide

To farm Heavy Hide efficiently, follow these steps:

Step 1: Prepare your gear

Before heading out, make sure you’re properly equipped. Craft a solid weapon such as a sword, axe, or bow, and wear some armor, even light armor can make a big difference. Carry plenty of healing items like food, potions, or bandages to stay alive during tough fights, and if you’re using a one-handed weapon, bring a shield to block heavy hits from bears.

Step 2: Go to a beast‑friendly biome

Travel to forest, taiga, or mountain biomes, as these are the areas where larger beasts commonly spawn. In later zones such as Zone 4, focus on regions with larger wildlife and higher mob density for better chances. If you have access to a map or minimap, mark known spawn areas and patrol them in a loop to find the mobs more efficiently.

Step 3: Hunt large animals

While hunting, also take down other large animals like big boars or large wolves, since they can drop Heavy Hide as well. After each kill, make sure to loot the corpse, any Heavy Hide drops will be added directly to your inventory.

Step 4: Process into Heavy Leather

Set up a Tanning Rack near your base or camp (it’s crafted at a Farmer’s Workbench). Open the rack and place Heavy Hide into the input slot, then wait for it to process. After a short time, the hide will be converted into Heavy Leather, ready to be used in crafting.

How to use Heavy Hide / Heavy Leather

Heavy Hide itself is only used to make Heavy Leather; you don’t craft directly with the raw hide. Once you have Heavy Leather, you can:

  • Craft mid‑tier armor (chestplate, leggings, etc.) at the appropriate crafting station.
  • Make larger bags and storage items that require Heavy Leather.
  • Use it in later recipes for tools, shields, or other gear that need tougher materials.

Farming Heavy Hide

Heavy Hide is a key mid‑game material in Hytale that comes from hunting bears and other large animals. By focusing on bear‑rich biomes and processing the hides into Heavy Leather, you can craft much better armor and gear to survive tougher zones.
