How to Fly in Terraria: New Mounts Explained

What to know

  • Flight is progression-based, with limited options before Hardmode and far stronger ones after.
  • Wings are the core flight mechanic, but boots, accessories, and mounts can extend or replace them.
  • Hardmode unlocks most real flight, thanks to Souls of Flight from Wyverns.
  • True infinite flight is endgame, tied to expert/master drops or rare mounts.

Flying in Terraria completely changes how you explore, fight bosses, and build. Early on, flight is short and situational, but as you progress, it evolves into sustained aerial control and eventually unlimited movement. Understanding what’s available at each stage helps you plan your gear and avoid wasting time chasing items you can’t yet use.

Flying before Hardmode with limited tools

Before defeating the Wall of Flesh, flight is intentionally restricted. The game gives you just enough air control to survive falls and reposition during fights, but not enough to trivialize exploration.

Fledgling Wings are the only true wings available before Hardmode. They are found exclusively in Skyware Chests on Floating Islands, which means you either need gravitation potions, tall platforms, or luck with world generation to reach them. Their flight time is very short, but they completely negate fall damage, which alone makes them valuable early on.

Rocket Boots don’t count as wings, but they are often your first taste of vertical mobility. Purchased from the Goblin Tinkerer for five gold, they provide a quick upward boost when you jump. On their own, they don’t allow hovering, but when combined with accessories like balloons or wings later, they become far more powerful.

At this stage, flight is best described as assisted jumping rather than true flying, and that’s by design.

Unlocking real flight after entering Hardmode

Once you defeat the Wall of Flesh and enter Hardmode, the entire flight system opens up. This is where Terraria expects you to start fighting airborne bosses and navigating dangerous vertical spaces.

The most important enemy here is the Wyvern, which spawns in the Sky layer. Wyverns drop Souls of Flight, and every crafted wing in Hardmode requires them. Without Souls of Flight, wings are simply not possible.

At a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil, you can craft several early Hardmode wings. Two of the most common options are Angel Wings and Harpy Wings, both offering reliable flight duration and horizontal control. Angel Wings require feathers and Souls of Light, while Harpy Wings rely on the much rarer Giant Harpy Feather.

What matters most here is not the specific wing you choose, but the fact that any Hardmode wing is a massive upgrade over pre-Hardmode options.

Buying and upgrading wings as you progress

Not all wings come from crafting. Some are purchased, and these often skip grind-heavy steps.

Leaf Wings are sold by the Witch Doctor when he is in the Jungle biome at night. For a long time, these wings were considered one of the best early Hardmode options because they are immediately usable and require no Souls of Flight farming by the player.

Fairy Wings, crafted using Pixie Dust dropped in the Underground Hallow, offer better control and flight time, making them ideal for mechanical bosses.

As you move deeper into Hardmode, wing stats gradually improve, but the real leap forward comes not from wings alone, but from accessories that remove their limitations entirely.

Achieving infinite flight with endgame items

True infinite flight is rare and powerful, and Terraria treats it as an endgame reward.

The most important accessory here is the Soaring Insignia. This item removes the flight time limit from wings and rocket boots entirely, while also boosting acceleration and jump speed. It only drops from the Empress of Light in Expert Mode, which makes it both difficult and skill-gated.

Once equipped, any wing becomes an infinite-flight tool, fundamentally changing movement and combat.

Using mounts to bypass wing limits entirely

Mounts are a parallel system to wings, and some of them provide built-in infinite flight, no accessories required.

Drill Containment UnitEndgame craftingFlight + extreme mining

The UFO mount is one of the most popular choices because it offers true omnidirectional flight with no setup. The Witch’s Broom is even better for precision movement, though it is locked behind higher difficulty modes. The Drill Containment Unit goes a step further, combining infinite flight with unmatched mining speed, making it the ultimate utility mount.

Choosing the right flight method for your stage

Flight in Terraria isn’t about rushing to the “best” option immediately. It’s about using the strongest tool available at your current progression point. Early wings are about safety, Hardmode wings are about mobility, and endgame flight is about freedom.

Once you reach infinite flight, the game’s vertical limits effectively disappear, and combat becomes more about positioning than survival.
