What to know
- Fishing in Hytale currently uses fishing traps, not rods
- You must upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench to Tier 4
- Traps only work in valid, deep natural water
- Rod fishing is planned but not yet implemented
Fishing in Hytale is a passive activity built around traps rather than active casting. While the system is still early, it’s already useful for gathering food and crafting materials—if you understand the setup requirements. This guide walks you through the exact steps needed to start fishing successfully.
How fishing works in Hytale
Fishing is handled entirely through placeable fishing traps. Once placed in suitable water, these traps generate fish over time. You simply return later to harvest them, making fishing a low-effort but location-dependent activity.

Rod fishing is not currently available, though developers and community expectations suggest it will arrive in a future update.
How to fish in Hytale using fishing traps
Step 2: Craft a Farmer’s Workbench
Using the regular Workbench, craft a Farmer’s Workbench. This station unlocks all farming, food, and fishing-related recipes.

Step 3: Upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench to Tier 4
Fishing traps are locked behind Tier 4 of the Farmer’s Workbench. Gather the required upgrade materials and apply the upgrade before proceeding.

Step 4: Craft a fishing trap
Once the workbench is Tier 2, you can craft a Fishing Trap. To craft a Fishing Trap you need:
- Any wood x10
- Essence of Life x50
- Plant Fiber x20
- Iron Ingot x1
Optionally, you can also craft fish bait, which:
- Increases fish yield
- Reduces the time required between harvests

To craft Fish Bait, use 3x of any Fruit and 5x Essence of Life
Step 5: Find suitable water
Take the fishing trap to a natural body of water such as a lake, river, or ocean.
Important placement notes:
- Shallow water may not work
- Artificial or player-made pools often fail
- Deeper, naturally generated water is more reliable

Step 6: Place the fishing trap
Place the trap directly into the water with the bait. If placed correctly, it will remain active and begin generating fish over time.

Step 7: Harvest the trap
After some time passes, interact with the trap to harvest fish. Known catches include catfish, with more varieties expected as fishing expands.

Common fishing mistakes to avoid
- Placing traps in shallow or decorative water
- Expecting instant results without waiting
- Ignoring bait when farming long-term
- Building full bases too close to traps, which may affect placement efficiency
Future of fishing in Hytale
Fishing is clearly an evolving system. Traps form the foundation, but developer hints and in-game design suggest rod-based fishing will arrive later. When it does, traps will likely remain useful for passive farming alongside active fishing.
