Team Cherry has revealed the first big expansion for the Hollow Knight: Silksong. Coming in 2026, Sea of Sorrow will feature new areas, bosses and tools. It will also be free for all players.
The developers have not provided any specific date for the release, and further details can be expected before the launch. This comes as not much of a surprise, as the game's initial release was announced just before a month.
Developers have also mentioned that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the Original Hollow Knight is also in development. This improved version will incorporate all the Silksong updates and improvements, like higher resolution, high-frame rate modes and graphical effects.
Players with Hollow Knight on Switch will be able to update to the new version for free. All the current versions of original Metroidvania soulslike are also being updated by the studio. If on PC, you may already have started seeing some of the bug fixes and features.
As per the Team Cherry blog post, "PC players can experience many of those updates right now, via the public-beta branches on Steam and GOG, where they’ve just gone live. That includes full 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratio support for those of you with Steam Decks or ultrawide monitors."
Going by the studio, Hollow Knight: Silksong has sold more than 7 million copies since its September release, and has millions playing on Xbox Game Pass. The team said, "It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!). Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further."
