Google is bringing back lock screen widgets to Android phones with the first Quarterly Platform Release (QPR1) of Android 16, scheduled for late summer 2025. This update marks a significant return for a feature that was removed nearly a decade ago with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The reintroduction of lock screen widgets aims to enhance user personalization and convenience. With this feature, you can manage smart home devices, check vital information like weather or stocks, and access tools such as timers—all without unlocking your phone. Google has confirmed that all existing widgets will be compatible with this new functionality.

Initially, the feature will be uniform across devices, as OEMs won't have the ability to customize the user interface at launch. However, future updates may allow manufacturers to tailor the experience further by implementing triggers like docking or charging status.

The design for lock screen widgets on phones differs from tablets due to screen size constraints. While tablets use a grid-based "glanceable hub," phones will display one column of widgets at a time. Accessing these widgets may involve activating the screensaver mode by docking or charging your device.

Dynamic resizing and coloring options are supported, ensuring that widgets adapt seamlessly to various device dimensions. Developers can also opt out of enabling their widgets for lock screen use if desired.

This update follows Google's earlier rollout of lock screen widgets on the Pixel Tablet with Android 15 QPR1 in December 2024. The upcoming release extends this functionality to smartphones through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), paving the way for broader adoption across devices.
