In Ghost of Yotei, the Undying Samurai mythic tale is one of the most rewarding side quests. To complete it, you must track down four Wind Chimes scattered across Ishikari Plain, overcome their guardians, and use them to summon the Undying Samurai. Once defeated, he grants you his legendary armor.
Wind Chime locations and guardians
| Chime | Location reference | Guardian/Boss | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | After quest cutscene, under tree | Bear | Strong but predictable lunges |
| Second | Stone Jaw Coast cliff edge | Bandits nearby | Grapple required to reach |
| Third | South of Rumoi River “m” | Ronin swordsman | Duel required |
| Fourth | North of Nakagoya Spring | Pack of wolves | Multiple fast enemies |
How to find all four Wind Chimes
First Wind Chime
- Location: Right ahead after the quest’s opening cutscene.
- Boss/Enemy: Listen story from Ugetsu later fight a large bear that guards the chime under the tree.
- Tip: Circle around the bear, strike after its lunge, and use fire arrows or bombs if available to make the fight easier.

Second Wind Chime
- Location: Cliffs at Stone Jaw Coast, on the western edge of the map (under the “st” in “Coast”).
- Boss/Enemy: None directly, but the area has roaming bandits nearby.
- Tip: Clear out the bandits first to avoid being ambushed while grappling across to the chime.

Third Wind Chime
- Location: Near Rumoi River, south of the “m” in “Rumoi.”
- Boss/Enemy: A wandering ronin swordsman challenges you before giving up the chime.
- Tip: He fights with fast strikes and parries. Break his guard with heavy attacks, then punish with combos.

Fourth Wind Chime
- Location: Slightly north of Nakagoya Spring, above the “ka” in “Naka-goya.”
- Boss/Enemy: Guarded by a group of wolves under a bent tree.
- Tip: Focus on one wolf at a time. Use quick slashes and dodge sideways to avoid being surrounded.

How to place them and summon the Undying Samurai
- After collecting all four, follow the wind toward the north-west of Ishikari Plain.
- Descend a cliff and slip through a gap into a hidden cave lined with hanging chimes.
- Place each Wind Chime on its corresponding wooden post.
- A cutscene triggers, summoning the Undying Samurai for the final duel.
