Every Dueling Tree location in Ghost of Yotei

The Dueling Trees are spread throughout Ezo, most commonly in Yotei Grasslands and the northern Tokachi Range. Begin at the Southern Coast camp to activate challenges, then travel to each marked spot.

Note: Every Dueling Tree fight sequence rewards a unique charm; however, this could vary depending on the order of the trials. So, rewards of charms can be as named or equivalent/similar to them.

Dueling Tree 1: Duel Among Graves

A lone ronin stands beneath a withered tree among tombstones and broken markers, inviting a duel to test your resolve. His stoic gaze belies a ruthless fighting spirit.

Location:
Yōtei Grasslands, just south of the Shikotsu River, on a hill southwest of Atsu’s home.

What to do:
Approach the tree, accept the duel challenge, and defeat the ronin in one-on-one combat.

NPC / fights:
A disciple of Takezo (ronin) who guards this site.

Expected rewards:
Charm of the Unrelenting Warrior or similar attribute-boosting charm.

Dueling Tree 2: Duel Before the Mountain

A serene clearing beneath the northeastern foot of Mount Yōtei, with wind stirring leaves. A ronin waits and challenges you to prove your strength before facing higher trials.

Location:
Yōtei Grasslands, at the mouth of the Yōtei River (northeastern foot of Mount Yōtei).

What to do:
Find and interact with the dueling tree, accept the duel, and defeat the ronin.

NPC / fights:
Another disciple of Takezo (ronin).

Expected rewards:
Charm of Renewed Determination or equivalent.

Dueling Tree 3: Duel Beneath Red Leaves

Among red-leafed trees in a quiet grove, a single dueling tree stands amid falling leaves. The beauty hides a fierce duel challenge from a roaming disciple.

Location:
Tokachi Range, northwest corner, accessible via the Amber Respite Shrine climb.

What to do:
Traverse the shrine, climb or nearby cliffs, reach the dueling tree, and challenge the ronin.

NPC / fights:
A disciple of Takezo guarding the grove.

Expected rewards:
Charm of Bold Deflection or similar.

Dueling Tree 4: Duel in the Marshland

A misty, marshy area with scattered reeds surrounds the dueling tree rising from the shallow water. The ronin challenges you to test your skill in a slippery, uneven battleground.

Location:
Tokachi Range, south of Tomamu Marshlands, near the Season’s Colours Sumi-e.

What to do:
Navigate the marsh paths, find the tree, accept the duel, and win against the ronin.

NPC / fights:
A disciple of Takezo, known for fluid sword movements and quick recoveries.

Expected rewards:
Charm of Bracing Victory or equivalent.

Dueling Tree 5: Duel Among Ruins

Amid the ruins of crumbling stone and moss-covered walls, the dueling tree stands as a symbol of forgotten honor. A lone ronin guards it, waiting to face a worthy opponent.

Location:
Tokachi Range, northeast corner, near Niikappu Falls or northeast of the Green Dye House.

What to do:
Follow hidden paths among cliffs, reach the tree, and engage in a duel.

NPC / fights:
A disciple of Takezo (ronin).

Expected rewards:
Charm of the Stout Heart or similar.

Dueling Tree 6: Coastal Duel (Final Duel with Takezo)

On a windswept cliff above the sea, a lone stump and tree mark the final dueling site. Here, you confront Takezo himself, in one of the most intense duels in the game.

Location:
Southern coast of the Yōtei Grasslands. This location unlocks after all five disciple duels are completed.

What to do:
After clearing the first five duels, interact with the stump by the campfire to “wait for Takezo.” Follow him to the beach to begin the duel.

NPC / fights:
Takezo himself, featuring a two-phase duel. In the second phase, Takezo fights using Dual Katana techniques.

Expected rewards:

  • Dual Katana Spirit Attack technique
  • Straw Hat of the Unrivalled (cosmetic)
  • Large charm upgrade

How to unlock and begin Dueling Trees

Speak with Ugetsu the storyteller at the Southern Coastal Camp to begin the 'Takezo the Unrivaled' questline; this is required before any duels can be triggered.​

Travel to each Dueling Tree as described in a particular questline. The ronin disciple will challenge you upon arrival at the location of the dueling tree.

Trophy and post-game content

Once all challenges are cleared, celebrate with the 'Unrivalled' trophy. The showdown with Takezo cements your standing as the ultimate duelist in Ezo, offering unique gear and skills.
