It has been well over a month and a half since Google released Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, but Samsung hasn’t yet release a roadmap of its Marshmallow update release plans.
Given the poor record of pushing out Android updates to its mid-range devices, we doubt if Samsung will rollout the Marshmallow update to Galaxy A5.
But thanks to the third-party development community, we already have an unofficial build of CM13 for Galaxy A5, which you can install on your device right this instance and have Marshmallow running on it.
CM13 is the Marshmallow based version of the popular CyanogenMod custom ROM. Team CM hasn’t yet released the ROM officially, but source code for CM13 has already been released so unofficial builds are already rolling in.
The unofficial Galaxy A5 CM13 ROM comes from developer TheWhisp over at xda. And since this is the first release of CM13 for the device, it is currently in preview status and not suitable for daily usage as per the dev.
However, looking at the known issues/bugs list (below) of this Galaxy A5 CM13 ROM, it seems pretty good to us for a daily driver.
- SELinux is set to permissive
- FM radio is not working
- Some features like NFC are not properly tested
- A lot other bugs since CyanogenMod is in progress of added their changes and features
