What to know

  • You can obtain Astalos extremely early, right after finishing the tutorial.
  • The method requires any Hammer weapon and a flying Monstie.
  • Surviving Astalos’ opening attack and correctly countering its move triggers a special den.
  • Boltreaver Astalos unlocks through mutation after restoring habitat in Broadleaf Basin.

Early access to strong Monsties can dramatically improve your progress in Monster Hunter Stories 3. One of the most powerful early monsters you can obtain is Astalos, along with its deviant form Boltreaver Astalos. While both are normally expected much later in the game, there is a clever method that allows you to encounter and farm Astalos almost immediately after the tutorial missions.

The strategy revolves around traveling to a specific location at night, surviving a powerful opening attack, and triggering a special invasive den that contains an Astalos egg. Once you hatch the monster, you can begin a process that eventually leads to unlocking the even stronger Boltreaver Astalos mutation.

Location to find Astalos egg in Monster Hunter Stories 3

The first step toward getting Astalos early is traveling to the Ashen Pass entrance at nighttime. This location contains a secluded section of the map that normally isn’t accessible through regular paths.

Once you reach the entrance area, you need to use a flying Monstie to access a strong updraft located nearby. By flying upward through this air current, you can reach a hidden elevated area where the Astalos encounter takes place. This route bypasses the usual progression requirements and lets you reach a location that would normally be visited much later.

Bringing a Hammer weapon is essential for the upcoming battle. The weapon’s level does not matter, meaning even a basic Hammer is enough for this strategy to work.

Surviving the first turn against Astalos

When you trigger the encounter, Astalos immediately begins the fight with an extremely powerful area-of-effect lightning attack. This opening move is designed to be devastating and typically removes two hearts instantly, making the battle feel overwhelming at first.

However, the goal here is not to defeat Astalos directly. The key objective is simply to survive the first turn of the battle. As long as your party endures the attack and remains standing, the next part of the strategy becomes possible.

After the opening attack, Astalos telegraphs its next action by showing whether it will use a Technical attack or a Speed attack. This telegraph is crucial because correctly responding to it triggers the event that leads to obtaining its egg.

Countering Astalos with the Hammer

Once Astalos reveals its attack type, you must use your Hammer to counter the incoming move using the correct attack category. This moment functions as a head-to-head clash mechanic.

If Astalos signals a Technical attack, you respond with the attack type that counters it. If it indicates Speed, you choose the corresponding counter as well. Successfully winning this clash is the key trigger for the next phase.

When the counter succeeds, the battle does not simply end. Instead, the game spawns a special invasive monster den nearby. This den contains the reward you are looking for: an Astalos egg.

Collecting the Astalos egg from the invasive den

After the successful counter, you can enter the newly spawned den and begin searching for eggs inside. The nest within the den has a chance to produce Astalos eggs, allowing you to obtain this powerful lightning monster far earlier than intended.

Once you secure the egg, the next step is to hatch it at a stable. This gives you your own Astalos Monstie, which is already extremely powerful for the early stages of the game.

But the process does not stop here. The real goal is unlocking the even stronger deviant form.

Preparing the Boltreaver Astalos mutation

Unlocking Boltreaver Astalos requires interacting with the habitat restoration system in Broadleaf Basin. After hatching your Astalos, you need to release it back into the wild within that region.

Releasing Astalos contributes to restoring the local ecosystem and begins the process of establishing a lightning-type monster population there. Once Astalos is introduced to the basin, more Astalos dens can begin appearing in the area, which allows you to farm additional eggs.

Farming these eggs is important because you will need multiple lightning monsters at high ranks for the mutation requirement.

Raising lightning monsters to trigger the deviant mutation

To unlock the Boltreaver mutation, the game requires a specific ecological setup within Broadleaf Basin. You must release three different lightning-type monsters into the region, with Astalos being one of them.

These monsters must be raised to S-rank within the habitat system. Increasing their rank requires repeatedly farming eggs, improving their traits, and contributing to the restoration process.

Once the region contains three high-rank lightning monsters, the ecosystem reaches a point where the Boltreaver Astalos mutation becomes available. This deviant version is significantly stronger than the standard Astalos and features enhanced lightning attacks and superior combat capabilities.

Because you began the process early in the game, you gain access to one of the most powerful lightning Monsties far sooner than most players.

Why this early Astalos method is powerful

Obtaining Astalos right after the tutorial missions provides a massive advantage during the early stages of the game. Astalos possesses strong lightning attacks, high offensive stats, and excellent mobility skills, making it one of the most valuable companions you can recruit early.

The ability to transition from Astalos into Boltreaver Astalos later amplifies this advantage even further. By following the habitat restoration process and meeting the mutation requirements, you can secure one of the strongest deviant Monsties long before many late-game areas are unlocked.

For players who enjoy optimizing their team early, this strategy provides a reliable way to build a powerful lightning monster lineup while progressing through the story.
