The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 has just gotten itself an Android 6.0 Marshmallow ROM that partly works for now, but is promising, and the developer nels83 should soon be able to sort out the remaining bugs/issues.

For the unknowledged, the Galaxy Tab 3 is a 2013 device so it is past its promised software upgrade period. There’s no way Samsung would officially release Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to the Tab 3. But that doesn’t mean your Tab won’t run the Marshmallow release.

An AOSP based custom ROM like this one, or CM13 probably in the future, is your best hope to get the freshest release of Android installed on your Tab 3.

However, since this is the first release of an Android 6.0 ROM for Galaxy Tab 3, you need to know that this isn’t ready for everyday use yet. Some of the major functionality like Camera, Network and GPS aren’t yet working on the ROM.

Below is a list of known bugs so far on the ROM:

  • Houdini
  • RIL
  • Camera
  • GPS
  • MHL
  • Secure videos (Widevine…)
  • HW audio decoding
  • F2FS
  • Multiuser
  • SELinux (permissive)

What you need to install a this ROM is a custom recovery like TWRP. Once you’ve TWRP installed on your Tab 3, you can grab the AOSP Marshmallow ROM from the download link below and simply flash it via recovery along with a Factory reset + Cache & Dalvik cache wipe.

Note: For updates to the ROM, be sure to check this xda post.

Since this is an AOSP based ROM, it doesn’t come with Google services pre-installed. To get Play Store and other Google services on an Android 6.0 AOSP ROM, you need to install a Marshmallow compatible Gapps package via recovery. Get it from the link below:

That’s all. Enjoy Android 6.0 Marshmallow on your Galaxy Tab 3.

Happy Androiding!
