The Essential Phone PH-1 is getting a new software update that brings the latest security patches and improvements. The company has been very fast with security updates, and is continuing to do a good job.
In the latest update, which is rolling out now, the device gets the latest December Android security patch. It’s hardly been a few days since Google themselves released the patch, and Essential has already released it for their device.
We're currently rolling out a software update (build NMJ51B) with December security patches.

The build number for the latest update is NMJ51B and it is being seeded over-the-air. Apart from the December security patch, we don’t think there’s anything new here. The previous update for the phone was focused on further improving the camera.
The Essential Phone is a really good buy, has the latest hardware, dual cameras, is priced well, and it looks good too. At the time of the release, the only complaint with the phone was that the cameras were bad. However, with timely updates, the company has improved the camera performance by a lot.
Essential is also working on bringing the Android Oreo update to the device. It is currently testing out the Oreo beta among a group of users. If you’re interested in trying out the beta, follow our guide here. The stable version of Oreo for Essential Phone will be released by the end of this month.
