Bad new for all Cyanogen users and fans out there. The company has announced that it will be shutting down all of its services for good. The custom Android ROM maker has been spiraling downwards from a long time. And now, they have finally made it official.
According to a blog post on their website, all services including the Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will not be supported after 31 December 2016. As the new year begins, Cyanogen users will be left disappointed. However, those who’re willing to continue the work can use the source code to build CM based ROMs.
As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally.
Cyanogen’s main aim was to build a custom ROM for Android devices with better customization features than Google’s stock version of Android. The company first collaborated with OnePlus and released CyanogenOS along with the OnePlus One. That didn’t work so well, and the partnership ended badly in 2014. After that, it has all been bad for the custom ROM developer.
The company recently shut down its Seattle based office and relocated the staff to Palo Alto, California. Sadly, the management at Cyanogen also separated ties with Steve Kondik, the co-founder and the original developer behind CyanogenMod ROM. Despite saying that Cyanogen will continue to work with greater efficiency by downsizing the team, the company now seems to have given up altogether.
