ChatGPT has officially launched group chats for all users worldwide, transforming the platform from a one-on-one assistant into a collaborative space for friends, family, and coworkers. The feature is now available to everyone on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, enabling up to 20 participants to work together in a shared conversation with ChatGPT.

Group chats in ChatGPT allow users to create a shared conversation space where multiple people can collaborate with each other and with ChatGPT.

To start a group chat, tap the people icon in the top right corner of the ChatGPT app or web interface. Participants can be added directly or by sharing a link. Each member is prompted to set up a brief profile with a name, username, and photo, making it easier to identify everyone in the group.

When a participant is added to an existing chat, a new group conversation is created, leaving the original chat unchanged. This ensures that private conversations remain separate from group discussions. Group chats are aggregated in a dedicated section of the sidebar, making it easy to switch between personal and group conversations.

ChatGPT’s role in group chats

ChatGPT has been trained with new social behaviors to navigate group conversations effectively. It can follow the flow of discussion, decide when to respond, and when to stay quiet based on the context. Users can tag ChatGPT in a message to prompt it to reply, and the chatbot can react to messages with emojis. ChatGPT can also reference profile photos, adding a more personalized touch to group interactions.

This feature is designed to make ChatGPT an active participant in group activities, helping users plan trips, co-write documents, settle debates, or conduct research together. The chatbot can search, summarize, and compare options, making group decision-making more efficient.
