What to know
- Rails and railcarts in Hytale require a Tier 2 Workbench—they cannot be crafted at Tier 1.
- Rails are made from any type of wooden planks and iron ingots, with one recipe producing four rails.
- The railcart itself also requires iron ingots.
Once placed, you can ride the railcart by pressing F to enter or exit and use W/S to move along the track. - Rails and railcarts can be picked up and reused without durability loss, making them a flexible way to build and modify your railway system.
In Hytale, you can craft Rails and a Railcart to easily travel and connect your base, but first, you need a Tier 2 Workbench. Once upgraded, you can craft tracks from wooden planks and iron, build a railcart, and set up your railway for smooth back-and-forth travel.
How to upgrade your Workbench to tier 2
To be able to craft Rails & Railcarts, you’ll need to upgrade your Tier 1 Workbench to Tier 2. Interact with your placed workbench and use the upgrade interface once you have the required materials in your inventory:
Required materials:
- 30 × Copper Ingots — smelted from copper ore in a furnace
- 20 × Iron Ingots — smelted from iron ore
- 20 × Linen Scraps — dropped by humanoid enemies and from breaking fibrous plants like tall grass
Once you confirm the upgrade, your workbench will become Tier 2, unlocking new crafting recipes and progression paths.
How to craft & use Rails & Railcarts
Follow the steps below to learn how to craft Rails and Railcarts, and how to set them up for use in Hytale:
Step 1: Use a Tier 2 Workbench
Rails and railcarts can only be crafted at a Tier 2 Workbench, so make sure your workbench is upgraded.

Step 2: Craft Rails
Open the Tier 2 Workbench and select the Rail recipe which requires x2 Any Planks and x1 Iron Ingot. Craft the recipe to get 4 rails.

Step 3: Craft a Railcart
In the same Tier 2 Workbench, select the railcart recipe which requires x12 Iron Ingots. Craft it, and the railcart will appear in your inventory.

Step 4: Place and use Rails & Railcart
Lay rails on the ground in any pattern you like, then place the railcart on the track. Interact (default F) to get in, use W/S to move forward or backward, and press F again to exit. To pick them up, hit the railcart three times to return it to your inventory, and rails can be collected and reused without durability loss.

Building your railway
Setting up a railway in Hytale is simple and fun. With a tier 2 workbench, wooden planks, and iron ingots, you can craft rails and a railcart, lay out your track, and travel easily by interacting with the cart and using W/S to move. Rails and carts can be picked up and reused, making it a flexible way to explore and connect your base.
