You can trigger Brilliant Failure near a riverside in Sundara Land. To start the encounter, jump into the water during You Hour. When the event activates, you’ll see a man crying next to his drowned goose, this begins the quest.

Follow these steps to complete the Brilliant Failure Encounter Quest in Where Winds Meet:
Step 1
Jump into the river during You Hour. Once the encounter triggers, you’ll spot a man at the riverbank mourning his dead goose.
Step 2
Speak to the man, Er Mengzi. He’ll explain that his goose drowned because Elder Yang created a metal wing for it, clever, but too heavy, causing the poor goose to sink.
Step 3
Visit Elder Yang and talk to him, but he will seem uninterested.
Step 4
Challenge him in Gift of Gab and get him to talk.
Step 5
Win the debate. After losing, Elder Yang softens up.
Step 6
He will then ask you to assist him with his big experiment and tells you to meet him tomorrow at Shen Hour.
Step 7
As you leave, Yang Ming, Elder Yang’s disciple, stops you. He warns that the upcoming experiment is extremely dangerous and suggests using a contraption to reduce the risk.
Step 8
Turn the in-game time to the next day at Shen hour.
Step 9
Return to Elder Yang’s residence. You’ll find him struggling to hold an odd weapon-like device. He claims he has created an “indestructible weapon” with self loading projectiles.
Step 10
He wants to test the weapon, as you and Ming try to stop him, the weapon sends Elder Yang flying. Search the area to locate him.

Step 11
You’ll find Elder Yang lying on the ground near a tree behind his house. He’s unharmed but admits his experiment has failed again. Though disappointed, he vows to keep trying until he succeeds and the quest ends.
