Inceptus is one of the major bosses introduced in Borderlands 4, playing the role of the Primordial Guardian. Its lair is the Arch of Inceptus, located in the Dissected Plateau region within the Fadefields area.
You’ll gain access only after gathering all the Vault Key Fragments in Fadefields and using them to unlock the Fadefields Vault (also called the Primordial Vault).

Once unlocked, Inceptus becomes a repeatable boss—players can farm it by revisiting its arena and activating the fight again via a mechanism (Moxxi’s Big Encore Machine) nearby.
Here's everything you need to know about Inceptus, where to find the boss, how to get to it, and the how to defeat it.
How to unlock the Fadefields Vault and find Inceptus
Before confronting Inceptus, gather three Vault key fragments scattered across the Fadefields region. Each fragment is hidden in a distinct spot, requiring exploration and, often, traversal abilities like grappling.
Fragment one in coastal bonescape
Head to Stillshore Point in the southwestern corner. Clear out Rippers around the larger houses, then drop into the water behind one. Jump onto the small dock and spot the fragment on a crate stamped with the number 32.

Fragment two in the howl
Travel northeast from The Launchpad fast travel point, past fields and farmhouses toward a large rock formation with glowing yellow centers. Climb the grey rocks to a small cave or wall edge where the fragment sits attached to a small rock.

Fragment three in Idolator's noose
Go to Rosemary's Reserve, southeast of the Someday Rise Safehouse. Fight through Rippers, then use your grappling hook to tear open a vent door next to ammo crates on a platform with machinery and a radioactive tank. Crawl through the vent to a lower room where the fragment rests in a dead Ripper's outstretched hand.

Once you have all fragments, head to the Dissected Plateau south of the Deep Seven Silo. Locate the Arch of Inceptus debris and the console at the highest point southwest of the “Zadra’s Backup Plan” fast travel station.

Interact with the altar to combine the fragments into a full key and repair the vault door.

Strategy for beating Primordial Guardian Inceptus
Inceptus brings layered boss phases, requiring more than just raw firepower. Movement is critical: grappling hooks, gliding, and midair dashes all play a role.
Step 1
Shoot at Inceptus while observing its attack patterns and avoid its whip-like tail and claw slashes.

Step 2
Use the grappling hook to expose weak points when the boss’s armor becomes vulnerable.

Step 3
When Inceptus enters its cocoon phase and floods the arena with poison, swing between grapple points on the ceiling’s stalactite-mushrooms to avoid damage.

Note: Inceptus is going to do this twice. So be prepared.
Step 4
Defeat its minions for second-wind revives if you get downed—these provide a lifeline in hectic phases.

Step 5
Once Inceptus falls, loot the Vault for rewards like unique class mods, grenades, and a Glide Pack upgrade, boosting traversal for the rest of the game.
Loot and rewards for defeating Inceptus

Defeating Inceptus yields several legendary items and progression rewards. Some key drops and rewards include:
| Reward type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Legendary weapons & shield | “Extra Medium” (shield), “Husky Friend” (shotgun), “Ravenfire” (heavy weapon) |
| Class Mods | Filántropo (Exo-Soldier), Elementalist, Avatar (Siren) |
| Glide Pack upgrade | Faster regeneration of the glide pack, unlocked on first kill via a glowing orb outside arena |
Why defeating Inceptus matters in your journey
Defeating Inceptus isn’t just about loot. It’s a key milestone:
- It grants access to powerful gear that boosts your strength early in the Fadefields region.
- It unlocks the Glide Pack upgrade, which helps in traversal and mobility in subsequent areas.
- It provides experience with boss mechanics and patterns, preparing you for more challenging vault guardians later.
Beating Inceptus is a rite of passage in Borderlands 4 — both a test of skill and a reward for perseverance.
Inceptus stands out as a core boss encounter in Borderlands 4, combining multi-phase mechanics, environmental hazards, and strategic weak points. You’ll need to hunt down key fragments to unlock its vault, then use movement, timing, and environmental knowledge to overcome its attacks and regeneration. The rewards — powerful loot and traversal upgrades — make it well worth the effort.
