Arc Raiders, the popular extraction shooter from Embark Studios, is quietly changing how some of its in-game dialogue is created. The developer has begun replacing AI-generated voice lines with recordings from real voice actors, acknowledging that human performances sound better and improve immersion.

The move follows controversy surrounding the game’s original approach to dialogue. When Arc Raiders launched in October 2025, it included voice lines produced using an AI text-to-speech system. The technology used voice models trained on recordings from paid actors, allowing developers to generate additional dialogue without scheduling new recording sessions every time a new line was needed.

While efficient, the decision sparked criticism across the gaming community. Some players and voice actors argued that using AI-generated dialogue blurred the boundary between supporting actors and replacing them. Even though the performers were compensated and had licensed their voices for the technology, many felt the practice could undermine the role of professional voice acting in games.

Embark Studios CEO Patrick Söderlund recently confirmed that the team has since re-recorded a number of lines using human actors. As a result, the game now contains fewer AI-generated voice lines than it did at launch. He also admitted that professional voice performances are simply better, highlighting a noticeable quality difference between AI output and real acting.

Despite the shift, the studio has not abandoned AI completely. According to Söderlund, the technology still plays a role during development as a production tool. Developers can quickly generate multiple dialogue variations, test them internally, and then decide which ones should be professionally recorded later. This approach helps teams experiment with dialogue systems and update live-service games more quickly without replacing actors entirely.

The timing of this change is also significant. The gaming industry has been debating the role of AI in creative work for several years, particularly after high-profile discussions around voice actor rights and the use of synthetic voices. Arc Raiders became one of the most visible examples of the issue because of its popularity and its early adoption of AI-assisted dialogue systems.

Seen from that perspective, the move to re-record lines with human actors serves two purposes. It improves the final quality of the game’s audio while also addressing concerns raised by players and performers. In practical terms, it suggests that many studios may eventually adopt a hybrid approach: using AI during development, but relying on real actors for the finished experience.

Arc Raiders itself remains one of the most successful extraction shooters released in recent years, selling millions of copies and maintaining strong player numbers since its launch in 2025. With ongoing updates and patches, the studio is continuing to refine the game—including how its characters sound.

In that sense, the shift toward human voice recordings may not signal the end of AI in game development. Instead, it shows how studios are experimenting with new tools while still recognizing the value of human creativity.
