What to know
- Google has removed the standalone Extra Dim toggle starting with Pixel 10 on Android 16.
- Extra Dim now automatically engages at the lowest brightness level.
- The change appears via a pop-up dialog on setup and when tapping the old shortcut.
- This integration aims to prevent forgetting to turn off Extra Dim and simplifies dimming control.
When Android first brought Extra Dim in Android 12, you had to enable it manually—either through Settings → Accessibility or a Quick Settings tile. It lowered the visual output by altering pixel data rather than hardware brightness, helping in very dark conditions. But you had to remember to turn it off later, or your screen stayed dimmer than you wanted.
With the Pixel 10 and Android 16, the Extra Dim feature is no longer its own switch—you’ll now find it baked right into the brightness slider for more seamless use.
On the Pixel 10 running Android 16, Google has removed the separate "Extra Dim" toggle that lowers visual output in very dark conditions. Extra Dim now activates automatically when you slide brightness all the way to the bottom and turns off as soon as you raise it.
You’ll see a pop-up saying “Extra dim is now part of the brightness slider” either when you tap the old Quick Settings shortcut or during initial setup.

No more will you risk forgetting to disable Extra Dim and getting caught with an overly dim display. This feels more intuitive, and you can lower brightness farther on the same slider instead of dealing with a separate toggle. It also makes the dimming gesture easier and reduces complexity in quick settings.
As of now, the feature is exclusive to the Pixel 10 series with Android 16. You probably won’t see it on older Pixel phones yet. It might come via updates later—Google tested the integration earlier on Pixel 9, so older devices might get it in time, though no announcement has confirmed that yet.
