It is that time of the month when Google releases the distribution numbers showing the percentage of devices each version of Android is running on, and many will be glad to see that Jelly Bean is surely but steadily climbing up the charts as it is now powering 6.7% devices (counting both Android 4.1 and 4.2), up from 2.7% just a month ago.
The growth wasn’t as huge for Ice Cream Sandwich, which jumped up by only 1.7% from last month, which can be attributed to the fact that very few Gingerbread-running devices have been upgraded to ICS, compared to Jelly Bean which is now coming out as default on a few Samsung and HTC devices and is also making its way to devices that launched with Android 4.0. Also, the fact that the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, and the Nexus 7 are all running Android 4.2 also helped the 4% increase in Jelly Bean’s uphill climb.
Meanwhile, Gingerbread refuses to back down and go away any time soon, as it is still powering a total of 50.8% of devices, down from 54.2% last month. Froyo takes up 10.3% of the numbers, while the rest is collectively shared by older devices running Cupcake, Donut, and Eclair.
What do you guys think? Is the latest distribution scenario nice to look at, or does the thought of the ugly old versions of Android still being alive bother you too much?
