HTC is rather infamous for its poor software update record – launching the latest flagship without the latest version of Android, leaving older devices in the dust (the Sensation got just one major update) et al – but it seems they’re on their way to a turnaround as the Android 4.2.2 update with HTC Sense 5.1 has leaked for the HTC Butterfly.
While many will point out that this isn’t for the device that matters, aka the One, it’s still a major sign of HTC hurrying up with updates. The Android version isn’t seen in the leak, but things like the quick toggles menu in the notifications menu confirm that it’s 4.2. What’s great is that HTC is following closely the look of stock Android’s toggles menu, instead of making it ugly and all greenish like Samsung has on the Galaxy S4, though it doesn’t look customizable like the latter’s so it’s probably not all better.
Sense 5.1 is also in tow, meaning Butterfly users will now get access to BlinkFeed on their homescreen for staying up to date with all their favourite news and social feeds. This is as promised by HTC to bring some of the newest features of Sense to older devices, though it remains to be seen just how many features HTC is able to back-port, as the video of the leaked build doesn’t let on much.
The system dump for the Android 4.2.2 update as well as the actual update file are also available for download, which should (hopefully) help developers port it to the One and other HTC devices, or at least grab some of the new Sense features and put them on custom ROMs based on currently available official firmware. HTC has unfortunately put in a watermark on the entire build that needs to be removed, but apart from that this leaked dump should provide some nice goodies.
