What to know

  • There are eight core fox statue puzzles unfold during the main "Kitsune" quest in Teshio Ridge's northern forests, testing your ability to interpret symbols and align guardians.
  • You'll need the Kitsune Cipher—unlocked mid-quest—to decode statue orientations, avoiding deadly traps marked by "death" symbols.
  • Rewards include the powerful Shinobi Armor set, progression dyes, and direct path to confronting the elusive Kitsune leader.

The fox statues in Ghost of Yōtei are more than simple decorative relics. Each one plays into the game’s deeper spiritual puzzle design—part logic, part observation, and part patience. When you first encounter these statues, they seem silent and mysterious, but every clue in the environment—from symbol markings to lantern placements—tells you exactly what to do if you look closely enough.

Across the snowy regions and hidden hideouts of Yōtei, these fox statues serve as keys to secrets tied to the Kitsune, a mythical fox spirit that guards sacred knowledge. In this guide, you’ll learn every puzzle’s location, the logic behind their symbols, and the exact steps needed to complete them without trial and error.

Overview of all Fox Statues

# Location / Stage Puzzle Type / Description
1 Nine Tails Hideout Entrance Lantern activation puzzle that opens the secret passage at the hideout’s entrance.
2 Inner Gate Area Placing fox statues on pedestals to unlock a large snow gate within the hideout.
3 Upper Path Beyond Gate Rotating multiple fox statues to align them correctly and open a vertical path upward.
4 Inner Hideout – Scroll Room Choosing the correct “safe” statue among several based on cipher clues found nearby.
5 Outer Courtyard (after hideout) Aligning four fox statues outdoors according to symbolic markings.
6 Dye House – Main Chamber Pedestal and rotating lid puzzle involving two fox statues that control a secret tunnel.
7 Dye House Tunnel / Cave Aligning a set of four statues inside a cave to unlock the next chamber.
8 Forest Camp Area Lantern and shadow-based puzzle involving lighting specific lanterns near fox statues.
9 Forest Before Kitsune Shrine Final alignment puzzle with three fox statues to open the path toward the Kitsune encounter.

Throughout the Kitsune arc, you will frequently encounter fox statues set as puzzles at key narrative junctions. These statues are often embedded in shrine entrances, locked doors, bridges, and even caves, reflecting the Kitsune’s trickster nature and his talent for deceiving intruders. If a statue is rotated incorrectly—or if certain “death” symbols are ignored—players may trigger hidden traps or fights with Nine Tails shinobi instead of opening the path forward

Locations and Solutions of the Fox Statues

Following are the locations and step by step solutions of each fox statue present in the game:

#1 - Teshio Ridge / Nine-Tails Hideout (Entrance to hideout)

Two fox statues flank the entrance; light the two lanterns with foxes on top to open the hidden passage.

Light only the two lanterns that have fox statues perched on top — one on the left, one on the right. Lighting any other lantern triggers traps or fire explosions. This opens the hidden entrance passage.

#2 - Teshio Ridge / Nine-Tails Hideout (Gate inside hideout)

There are two statues you need to place on pedestals (left and right) to open the gate and proceed upward.

Inner Gate Area – Pedestal Placement Puzzle

Pick up the two fox statues near the gate.

  • Place the right-paw-raised statue on the left pedestal.
  • Place the left-paw-raised statue on the right pedestal.
They must face toward each other (toward the gate) to unlock it.
#3 - Teshio Ridge / Nine-Tails Hideout (Inner altar room)

Four fox statues outside a building must be aligned to match the symbols you traced from a scroll (rotate them north, south, east, west) to make ladder appear.

Upper Path Beyond the Gate – Rotation Puzzle

Rotate the fox statues according to the base cipher clues.
From left to right:

  • First statue → face right
  • Second → face forward
  • Third → face back
  • Fourth → face left
Once aligned, the upper path becomes accessible.
#4 - Dye House area (Dye House basement / tunnel area)

Place two fox statues on pedestals (left one on left, right one on right), then rotate lids (one left, one right) to unlock a passage.

Place statues and rotate lids in sequence:

  • Left-facing statue → left pedestal
  • Right-facing statue → right pedestal
    Then rotate the lids:
  • Left lid → left arrow
  • Right lid → right arrow

Finally, interact with the center lid to open the underground tunnel with arrow face top.

#5 - Snow’s Blight Shrine / Hideout

Turn fox statues to mirror wall foxes. Also carry small fox statues under blue lamps and place them near a front gate to reveal hidden passage.

In the tunnel’s chamber, rotate the four fox statues as follows:

  • First statue: leave as is
  • Second: face right
  • Third: face right
  • Fourth: face left
When correct, a hidden passage opens deeper into the cave.
#6 - Finding a Way Into The Sentinel Forest

Light the foxes similar to the ones in front of the tree to reveal indentation. Use the loot from the puzzle boxes to open a way.

Light the lanterns in front of the correct statues only:

  • Front left
  • Middle right
  • Back right
When the shadows align properly, a chest or hidden route appears.
#7 - Finding a way through The Sentinel Forest

There are three foxes that have to be rotated in a way that helps in the uncovering the path in the forest ahead.

  • Left statue: face right
  • Middle statue: face away (backwards)
  • Right statue: face left
The ground trembles and a new route opens toward the Nine-Tails shrine.
#8 - To open the door in the Sentinel Forest

Interchange the foxes on the wooden pedestal to match the ones that are behind them on the pillar.

Remove the foxes from the wooden pedestal and interchange their positions.

#9 - Open the path beyond the Sentinel Forest

Light the brazier attached to the fox statues and rotate it accordingly to open the door ahead.

With the help of Oyuki, turn the foxes around together for the door to open.

Tips for solving Fox Statue puzzles

Study the base symbols/cipher carefully

Many fox puzzles rely on reading symbolic clues (circle, triangle, square, arrows) printed at the bases of statues or lanterns. The cipher you copy inside hideouts often decodes these.

Save before puzzles

Wrong moves (lighting wrong lantern, touching wrong statue) often penalize you (fire damage, traps).

Use visual mirrors/reference statues

In hideouts, there are sometimes wall statues you mimic (Snow’s Blight) to know orientation.

Follow directional mapping —

“Circle → right, square → left, triangle → forward, etc."

Don’t touch “forbidden” statues

Some are traps. Especially far left ones in hideouts.

Manage light /light puzzles carefully

Only light the ones matching fox statues; others lead to explosions or reset.

Observe environmental clues

Often, the correct direction or statue pose is hinted by nearby decorations, wall carvings, or adjacent symbols.

The nine fox statue puzzles in the Kitsune Arc test your observation and logic, mirroring the fox’s cunning spirit. Solving them all unlocks the Nine-Tails Shrine and grants the final Kitsune Fragment, leading to the Nine-Tails Mask. Each correct alignment feels less like a puzzle and more like attuning to the Kitsune’s rhythm — a balance of patience, insight, and intuition.
