- Online multiplayer is planned as a free update after release.
- Players share story decisions, character control, and survival outcomes together.
If you are wondering whether Directive 8020 is multiplayer, the answer is yes — but with some important details depending on how you want to play.
At launch on May 12, 2026, the game includes a full single-player experience alongside local couch co-op multiplayer through the returning “Movie Night” mode. In this mode, up to five players can share one controller and take turns controlling different crew members aboard the Cassiopeia spaceship.
Like previous games in The Dark Pictures Anthology, every choice affects the story, relationships, and survival of the crew. In multiplayer, this means your group collectively decides who lives, who dies, and which branching paths the story follows.

The biggest new addition is online multiplayer. For the first time in the series, Supermassive Games confirmed that Movie Night mode will also support online play. However, online multiplayer will not be available on day one. Instead, it will arrive later as a free update across all platforms.
Supermassive has also confirmed that players can mix couch co-op and online multiplayer together, allowing some friends to play locally while others join remotely.

Outside multiplayer, the game remains heavily focused on cinematic horror storytelling. Directive 8020 introduces new stealth gameplay, live combat moments, branching “Destinies” systems, and a rewind-style “Turning Points” mechanic that lets you revisit critical decisions.
The game launches for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
