Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite: Save the World, the original PvE mode that launched before Battle Royale, will become free-to-play on April 16, 2026. The announcement marks a major shift for a mode that has required a paid founder’s pack since its early-access release in 2017.

You will soon be able to access the cooperative survival experience without buying the game. The update opens the mode to players across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, cloud platforms, and Nintendo Switch 2, bringing it closer to the accessibility of Fortnite’s other free modes.

Save the World is a cooperative PvE campaign where you and up to three other players gather resources, build defenses, and fight waves of enemies known as “Husks.” The mode originally formed the foundation of Fortnite before Battle Royale became the dominant experience worldwide.

To prepare for the free-to-play transition, Epic has stopped new purchases of Save the World starting March 11, although existing owners can continue playing normally until the switch happens.

If you already own the mode, Epic says you will receive in-game rewards such as superchargers, vouchers, and gold as a thank-you for supporting the game over the years. Founders will also keep the ability to earn V-Bucks through certain missions and quests.

Epic is also encouraging players to pre-register ahead of the April launch. Community milestones tied to registration numbers will unlock rewards for everyone who signs up, including a special hero and cosmetic bonuses.

The change fulfills a long-standing expectation among Fortnite players. Early in development, Epic had planned for Save the World to eventually become free-to-play, but the idea was delayed for years while Battle Royale took center stage.

With the April update, you will be able to experience the mode that started Fortnite’s ecosystem without paying upfront, potentially bringing a large new player base into the cooperative campaign.
