In this guide, we’ll explain how the hidden storage trick works and how to set it up for a cleaner, more immersive build.
In Hytale, crafting stations don’t rely only on what’s in your inventory. When you open a station (like a Workbench or Chef’s Stove), the game automatically checks nearby chests and uses those materials for crafting.
This means you can keep your base clean and clutter-free by hiding resource chests out of sight, underground or behind walls, while still being able to craft normally. As long as the chest is within range, the station will “see” its contents and treat them as if they’re in your inventory.
Range and valid placement
Each crafting station can only pull materials from chests placed within a specific range.
For a Workbench, the valid area is:
- Horizontal range: About 15 blocks long × 6 blocks wide around the station.
- Vertical range: Up to 3 blocks above or 3 blocks below the workbench.
This means your chests can be:
- On the same level around the workbench
- Above it (attic, upper floor)
- Below it (basement, under the floor)
As long as the chest stays inside this 3D area, the station will detect it.
Place it outside this range, and the materials won’t be usable for crafting.
Here’s how to use this trick to keep your builds clean and organized.
Step 1: Place your crafting station
Choose where you want your workbench, stove, or other crafting station in your base (e.g., in a workshop or kitchen). Place it in a spot that looks good and is easy to access.
Choose a spot for your chests that stays within the station’s range. You can place them 1–3 blocks below (basement), 1–3 blocks above (attic), or hidden inside walls or pillars, as long as they remain within the 15×6 horizontal area and the 3-block vertical range, the crafting station will still detect them.
Step 3: Place and fill the chests
Put chests in your chosen hidden location (basement, attic, or behind walls) and fill them with the materials you commonly use at that station. For a workbench, that might be logs, plant fibers, and tree sap; for a stove, it could be raw food and cooking ingredients.
Step 4: Test the connection
Open the crafting station and check if the recipes are available. If a recipe is missing, one or more required items are in a chest that’s out of range. Move that chest into the valid area and try again.
