What to know
- Copper is found as ore veins, mainly underground.
- Caves are the most reliable early source. With Patch 2, it is now also the primary ore found at upper levels.
- You need a furnace to smelt copper ore into ingots.
- Copper gear is a major upgrade from crude tools.
In Hytale, copper is the first true metal you’ll work with. Once you start collecting and smelting it, you unlock stronger tools, better weapons, and smoother progression into mid-game systems.

How to mine Copper ore in Hytale for Copper Ingots
Step 1: Craft a basic pickaxe
While you can mine some stone by hand, a crude pickaxe dramatically increases mining speed and efficiency.
Step 2: Enter caves carefully
Bring basic weapons and light sources. Hostile creatures commonly spawn near copper-rich areas.
Step 3: Look for orange-brown ore veins
Copper ore stands out against gray stone with a warm, orange-toned texture.
Step 4: Mine the entire vein
Copper often spawns in clusters. Fully mine around the ore to avoid missing hidden blocks.
Step 5: Return safely to smelt
Once collected, head back to your base to smelt the ore into copper ingots using a furnace.
Smelting Copper ore into ingots
| Input | Output |
|---|---|
| Copper Ore | Copper Ingot |
| Furnace | Required |
| Fuel | Required |
Copper ore is not usable until smelted. Place it in the furnace along with fuel to convert it into copper ingots.
What Copper is used for in Hytale
| Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Copper Pickaxe | Faster mining |
| Copper Weapons | Increased damage |
| Copper Tools | Higher durability |
| Crafting stations | Progression unlocks |
Copper gear represents a significant jump in power and durability compared to crude equipment.
All Copper locations in Hytale
Copper spawns in multiple underground environments, but some locations are far more efficient than others.
Update: Patch 2’s changes in ore distribution system have now made copper the primary ore that is found at higher levels. Since copper tools are the first metal tools you create, it is only logical that that is what you find first.
#1 Shallow caves
Caves are the best early-game source of copper. Look along cave walls and ceilings where copper ore veins are clearly visible embedded in stone.
#2 Underground stone layers
Below the surface soil layer, copper frequently appears mixed into stone. Digging horizontally at shallow depths often reveals multiple veins without going too deep.
#3 Hillsides and cliff faces
In some biomes, copper ore is partially exposed on cliff walls or steep hills. These are easy pickups since they don’t require deep mining.
#4 Large cavern systems
Bigger cave networks often contain multiple copper veins clustered together, making them ideal for bulk farming once you’re comfortable with combat.
Tips for farming Copper in Hytale
- Focus on caves before strip-mining
- Mine during daylight to reduce surface threats
- Bring storage or make frequent trips back
- Mark rich cave systems for later revisits
Why copper matters early in Hytale
Copper unlocks your transition from survival to expansion. Once you’re equipped with copper tools, mining becomes faster, combat becomes safer, and exploration opens up dramatically.
Moving beyond copper
After gearing up with copper, you’ll be ready to push deeper underground in search of iron and higher-tier materials like Cobalt and Thorium. Copper sets the foundation for everything that follows.
